What does it mean for a town when 5-6 businesses close up within a single year? Should I consider moving away?
Different types. Mostly retail. A lot of them were long-time.
The strange thing is that 2 businesses announced they were closing within a day or two of each other just this week.

What does it mean when a small shack in the middle of nowhere that calls itself a 'furniture store' says that it's having a closing sale, and 1 year later, it's still having that sale? (No, it isn't abandoned.)
That 5-6 businesses closed. We really need more information. They could have been owned by someone who had to close it due to an illness, lack of interest, retirement, death, or they just weren't doing very well (which could be due to the owner's inability to run it or the economy, or just the wrong type of store for that area). What does it mean for a town when 5-6 businesses close up within a single year?
Sometimes it could have nothing to do with your area in particular, but with the big picture. The town I used to live had a large Woolworths, which I understand was quite profitable, because it filled a niche in the limited retail facilities of the town. The problem is, in the rest of the country it was redundant and unprofitable, so the entire company closed down, taking our branch with it. What's really telling is how long it takes for somebody else to buy the space, and in this economy, that might take longer than you've yet had.
