what do you think the Old Earth Relic *is*?

Playboy and some toilet paper.

Or, in Harmony, it serves as warning what happens if you ignore the ecology of your home planet and why it's better to, well, live in harmony with the native ecosystem.

All affinities are reactions to the Great Mistake and the Seeding, it's just a different interpretation in every case.

Yeah, that is a better way of looking at it, as the OERs still provide culture after you choose harmony. :p It would basically be like some sort of leftist bashing of earth history, namely referring to inaction on climate change and the wars that occur between now and the Seeding.

Whatever it is, It would be something very ugly that make people feel like settling far from it. That's why the border is expanding even with slow or zero population growth. In Kavithan's case. It's probably some "prophet's work" that make people dwell fervently further and further

Probably "Star Wars: Jar Jar Binks' Adventures" (aka: the big mistake)

I think we have a winner. They put it on display for all to see as a warning on how low humanity can sink.

Undefined. Like the Contact Victory. Like the Great Mistake. Bad Firaxis, that's a bad Firaxis *whips out newspaper to discipline the developers* :)

I always imagined that Old Earth's relics were replicas of famous Earth landmarks and monuments: Washinton's Obelisk, Paris's Arc de Triomph, New Delhi's Lotus temple, etc, etc. A small part of the old Earth's cultural heritage :)

It's a large globe of the Earth.

At least that's what I always imagined it is. Didn't really think about it until just now ...

I'd wager its either some relic or monument brought from Earth or a monument erected glorifying the sponsor's heritage on earth - something to reinforce a sense of identity and common heritage.

(Statue of a famous leader, miniature recreation of some monument, piece of art depicting something about their heritage, ect.)
_____________________________________

Records of Earth would be a given that any sponsor worth their salt would bring, so I'd rule that out.

Kim Kardashian's sex tape on a CD-ROM, inside a cd case with her pic on the cover showing her ass. It's what got people to finally start fleeing earth and ultimately save humanity...they use it in the new world to remind them what never to go back to...celebrity worship.

Did I win?

I think that the Old Earth Relic could be a number of things, but my favorite option is a treasure trove/library of writing and images from Earthly civilizations. Whatever the Seeders found meaningful and moving would have been brought along with the mission, and of course they could have brought A LOT of it, seeing as data storage isn't particularly hard.

You have to actually build it in your city so it's a shrine which pays homage to Earth. It's not an item which was brought back from Earth. Also, you can build one in every city so it can't be some limited quantity item which was brought back from Earth.

Depends on the faction

Franco-Iberia: The Canon, distributed to a series of museums, galleries with state of the art interfaces.

Slavic Federation: Worker monuments, mechanical achievements of the faction. Focusing on the stylish and practical. But mostly practical and approved by Central Directorate.

Commonwealth: The first brewery of the Commonwealth, with family history dating back to their achievements as well as a focus on creature comforts.

ARC: ARC's approved cultural works that describe the best of ARC, salvaged works of art that is replicated by the ARC's science team as well as artwork "acquired" by ARC subsideries

Pan-Asian: Technological achievements and Asiatic literature that promotes thinking over spirituality.

Brasilia: Military works, famous military anthems and war films and literature such as Heinlein.

Pan African Union: Zoos of extinct animals recloned as well as a variety of African artifacts.

Khativian Protectorate: Spiritual works related to the Protectorate, from the Exodite Mantras, the Bhagavad and the Kali Meditations, it holds the source of Khativian enlightenment.

All of them also include the book they wrote (such as We are destined to Prosper, This is Not Exile, Scientific Morality and Remarques.)

It doesn't follow logically that an old Earth Relic would "just" be a trinket they grabbed with them. It would raise questions about the construction of a second OER. Every Earth Trinket would be found somewhere in your first city. This would mean that in order to construct a second OER, your second city would have to somehow acquire their own artifacts by either trading with your capitol or sending an explorer out to find one.

As for what I would propose the OER is? It's a museum with artifacts or replica artifacts from the Old Earth. In addition, there would also be "survivor's stories" about the earliest colonists on log, and any media they could find.

As for how various factions perceive it, they likely all perceive it in a surprisingly similar way: Mourning the Old Earth. For example, a tour would probably end with the guide saying:

Harmony: Remember, kids, our ancestor's mistakes. We cannot repeat them.

Supremacy: Remember, kids, that even when the world was falling apart, we persevered, and grew even stronger than we ever were before.

Purity: Remember, kids, that these people were our kin. Their fight isn't over, and this is the front line.
