What does your (nearest) townhall look like?

The new townhall here (finished 2 years ago) is an abomination. No class at all. A post-modern nasty massive heap of concrete :(

Terrible.

The one used before was actually pretty cool, although it is the huge 'Caravanserai' building, originally functioning in late ottoman times as the vast hostel of the city.

- So, does your own townhall look better or worse? :\

Both pretty standard English town halls, rather nice establishments in my opinion.

Of course, this being Scotland, rather than a town hall where the mayor oversees the town, it's a city chambers where the provost oversees the burgh, because we'll latch onto any excuse to distinguish ourselves from the English.

I like it. A very nice example of early Modernism. Avoids the self-satisfied futurism you sometimes find in the International Style, or the inhumanity often associated with municipal modernism. Suggests something of postwar brutalism, but doesn't sacrifice the human scale for the sake of statement. The asymmetry, particularly the use of the tower, recalls the drama of the Gothic style, but without resorting to the glib references of postmodernism. It's unapologetically Modernist, but even from a single photograph suggests a sense of place; not always an easy feat, that, knitting together the universal ideals of Modernism with the particularity of the actual built environment.

Good job, 5/5, would admire again.

Our former city hall.

Our new "improved" city hall, the building on the left. There is even a cinema next to it, if you really care.

My town's city hall:

Nobody really likes it too much and it's actually too small now for what they need it for. This building was almost taken over by the university that I work for and turned into a downtown campus, but the deal fell through. If it didn't, the city would have built a new city hall somewhere else. Which is going to be expensive, and probably won't happen for a while for that reason - but it's really needed.

This is the old city hall we used to have:

It's now got apartment units and condo units up top, and a convenience store and a bar/restaurant at street level. I actually lived here for a while! Top floor, the right most 3 windows used to be mine. edit: I was close, move over 2 windows to the left and that was my apartment.
