AFAIK the "vanilla" thing comes from financial instruments, specifically futures and options that became so complicated that saying option would not mean anything so you had to say plain option but it was lame as the other options were named 'butterfly' 'box' aso so they called plain vanilla with reference to the vanilla icecream as opposed to combined/mixed icecream.
I appologise if everybody on the planet knew the story but i feel like a guru saying it.
