I've just got around to buying Civ 5 and on booting it up I can't seem to get the strategy layer like the one that can be drawn on in Civ 4. Has this been removed or can I just not find it?

I'm really rubbish at Civ but just love the game (that's all that matter right?) and used to jot down resource locations, first encounters with other nations, last known borders of nations while scouting, etc. Never helped (I still lose even at low levels) but it made me feel like I was doing some kind of planning and I kind of miss it.

Doesn't exist. This really gets me as well. Every now and then I ask in the mod section is someone can make a sign/dot map mod but so far no luck!

Might have to get some white board markers and draw on my pc screen :D

aah, that sucks. I've only really booted up the game and had a little play around. I can't find stuff as easily as in Civ 4 but the strategy layer does look better to me with its options, if only I could annotate it. Oh well, I'll probably get used to it.

Why not use "print-screen" and load the image into some editing program that lets you draw on it?

Have you ever played civ4 with the BUG mod? It meant you didn't have to leave the game to dot map. It just let you plop down your dot map on the fly and then bring it up in game as an overlay. Also the basic signing was great for leaving reminders etc about what you were planning in any given location.

Both functions were particularly good for SGing.

EDIT

Here is an example form an old civ4 SG I played of the BUG dot map in action.
