What is "AAARRGGHH" Unhappiness?

I've seen many types of unhappiness in cities, and I know their causes, but I've encountered a new one: "AAARRGGHH!". It wasn't in any my cities, but in the capitol city of one of my vassals, with whom I had a huge :espionage: lead.

The unhappiness breakdown was:
  • +3  it's too crowded (makes sense, the population was 3)
  • +1  down foreign influence (makes sense, they are my vassal)
  • +1  AAARRGGHH!!! (what the frack does that mean!?!)

Seriously, the only people I know who say AAARRGGHH!!! are Pirates. These are Spaniards in Santiago, not the Blackbeard's crew aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge. They were no Privateers docked in that city because it's land-locked. This pretty much precludes any Privateer related events. So if anyone knows the cause AAARRGGHH!!! and would share it, I'd be most grateful.

AAARGH!!! is the default label for an unhappy face, if no specific string was passed with the event that caused the . It's rare, as most -causes do have specific labels.

One known cause is the "Philosopher" Random event (Getting a dude in your city, who will boost research a bit, but will also sometimes run around in the streets preaching some BS and making people go :aargh:).

Definitely nothing to do with Privateers, even tho AAAARGH!!! does indeed sound pirat'ish

I don't think it's rare because I get it all the time. Often it comes from those pesky events. Maybe they scale more BAD-EVENTS on harder levels?

The aaarrgghh unhappiness, unlike whipping unhappiness, is permanent. In the EventInfos.xml file, you have the option to trigger either kind as an effect. My guess is, you got a bad random event.

It might also be a handicap...what difficulty were you playing on? I'm not to familar with the AI handicaps, but it is definitely within the realm of possibility.

EDIT: Another BSG fan! It took me a second to remember where I heard that before!

I had an event the other day where I got to choose a free academy for 2 unhapiness and a free scientist for 1 unhappiness that I think falls under this category as well. 2 unhappiness is worth +50% beakers imo.

This is the philosopher event.

It's possible there are other events causing AAARGH!!!, but i am not aware fo any. In fact i barely ever get the Philosopher event. I think it goes more with play style than difficultie - event's need certain conditions within a empire to be eligible at all.

Controversial Philosopher
Prereq: Capital with more than 35 research per turn AND Theocracy Civic AND PHILOSOPHY
Obsolete: SCIENTIFIC_METHOD
Active/Weight: 75/1000
Result:
1.+1 happy face for 15 turns in all cities
2.Capital loses 1 happy faces AND 1 free scientist
3.pay gold (100 base) AND Capital loses 2 happy faces AND Capital gains

On a quick side-note...
Does anyone know how the "weighting" for the events works?
For example: The Controversial Pholosopher above has an Active/Weight ration of 75/1000.
What does that mean?

It means that it has a chance of 75% to be active in a given game (determined at the start of a game).

When the game decides to roll up a random event (random, biased by the time since the last event), it collects all the events that elgible at that point of time (= are active in the game AND allowed to happen (Some are bound to civics, techs, religion, etc..)).

Any event that is eligible has a chance to strike = events weight out of Sum(weights of all eligible events).

Setting either one or both to 0 should disable the event.

best way to handle it is to built the global theater in the capital.

I can not tell if he is kidding....

The Pirate references were added for gratuitous humor, but the inquiry was legit. I really didn't know that "AAARRGGGHHH" referred to misc/unclassified unhappiness.

BTW, I appreciate the info from all the responders!

:thanx:

I was pertaining to the Globe-Theater in capital....

i got "aaaarrrgghh" unhappiness in one of my cities in the Charlemagne scenario, and I think by default.
