I actually do want to play a fair game.....someday :P so what is considered as cheating and what is not

reloading until you get a really awesome starting spot?

Making a scenario on tiny that makes everyone so squished that early wars are good and you don't have to make settlers?

reloading until your tank beats that smegging spearman?

playing chieftan when you can beat a monarch level game :D ?

Such and such, make up your own commandments for civ3 ;)

I only reload if my starting location is in the tundra or jungle, or if I am just getting whipped in a large war.

Playing single player nothing is cheating. The object is to have fun, so whatever tatics you use is ok. Now in multiplayer or a GOTM type contest it needs to be agreed upon ahead of time of what is and isnt against the rules.

reloading until you get a really awesome starting spot?

->Not cheating.

Making a scenario on tiny that makes everyone so squished that early wars are good and you don't have to make settlers?

->Playing a pre made map is always cheating.

reloading until your tank beats that smegging spearman?

->Definitely cheating.

playing chieftan when you can beat a monarch level game :D ?

->Not cheating at all!

Such and such, make up your own commandments for civ3 ;)

->Though shalt not reload unless there is a glitch or a crash.

Though shalt not use the "exploits" so classified in the Civ3GOTM rules.

I understand cheating as using options that distort your skills as compared with the other players or the AI.
In GOTM (see Game of The Month forum) cheating is defined mostly by reloading or using cheat programs to reveal the map, trainers etc.
Other players (see Realms Beyond ) limit their actions further as the AI cannot react to some of your actions as it should. furthermore they developed an honorable code for the humans that are not allowed to cheat the AI at all (break treaties).

My post is a summary. Read the relevant links for full information

I agree with Woody - in a single player game the object is to have fun.

I get the most satisfaction form a game if I do not take advantage of flaws in the AI.

Often I play and honourable Civ, but I see nothing wrong with playing a sneaky Civ.

The basic rule I play to is if real leaders do it then I can do it to.
Would Gandi crack the whip?

For each game I set different rules for myself - when I play OCC I allow myself to reject bad sites, when I play Emperor (this is above my level) I allow myself to reload.

I mostly agree with Woody. As long as you play single player games, nothing is cheating. The reload function with save random seed off is in the game for one reason: To make the gameer able to reload and get a different result if he didn't like the first. So sonce Firaxis deliberatelt added this function, you're not cheating by using it.

There's of course a big IF here. If youre playing a GOTM game or submit your game to HoF, then reloading is cheating, as well as many exploits which you can find in the GOTM rules.

Also, if you start telling others about your results or bragging about your score, then I would consider reloading cheating as well.

But assuming that you're only playing for fun, then do whatever you want that gives yourself most satisfaction.

Cheating is in the eye of the beholder. ;)

So long as it's not MP games or games involving others (like GOTM, PBEM etc), why not? I don't see what's wrong with 'cheating' in your own personal private SP games.

Though I don't of course 'cheat'. :) Too lazy and troublesome...
