I know this thread has been done before but it didn't have a poll (which I thought it really needed).

later I will also make another poll on what level you usually play.

I have got the game out on Diety level; I did a lot of research before I got it though :)

I've beaten Warlord, but that was in Civ2.

i play at warlord. I usually win a space race by myself, or when i dont have a good start, I'll be nice to a strong AI and form a permanent alliance later

I have only beaten Monarch. I have attempted Emporer quite a few times but I honestly do not know if I have beaten one on it yet. I know I have beaten Monarch. I have a deity game I am working on but I haven't played it recently. I am convinced I can get a cultural victory on it. But anyways, I only play on huge maps and wont turn off the barbs (Mostly I keep them on raging) so that makes every step up a lot more challenging. But I like my settings more than the ability to say what level I have beat the game on. :p

I have won several times on Emperor, in vanilla and Warlords. I think that a way for people to get to a higher difficulty is choose a long game speed and a civ with a rushing UU (Rome, Persia). Then again, I don't understand the people who obsess about beating a certain diffuculty level. I think that the point of playing is to have fun, not to win against a certain level.

For me, being able to beat a diffiiculty means being able to win at least two difference victory types (conquest and domination are interchangeable) on random settings, which means I have beaten Emperor. i have beaten Deity on gimmick settings with conquest, but that doesn't count. I can only beat Immortal with Cultural atm, although I actually haven't tried any others, since my current computer can't play the game.

Deity for me.

It would also be interesting to know if everyone would answer the same for Warlords as Vanilla. I've only played Warlords a handful of times, finding it harder to consistently beat it at higher level. I think only one deity win on warlords, and that was a future era space race.

BTW, I can guarantee Moonsinger has won above Settler. She owns the warmonger rows of the Deity HOF table. I agree with CliftonBazaar, she is obviously one of the elite CIV players in the world.

I won at prince level before. Hard to finish games, always get bored and start a new game.

Settler level is for trying new experiments without the fear of an overpowered AI invading; finishing games in BC is the real challenge :)

I bought Civ4 about a week ago. I had played Civ3 a decent amount so I started on Warlord and was so handily winning that I stopped playing. So I decided to jump up to Prince and am slightly shocked that I'm going to win this one as well. I am playing on an island map which might distort things some, but Russia and I were the other civs to share an island so I had to deal with her (thankfully I founded cities that helped cut off her settle choices) and because of her cultural ocean blockade and my tech choices, I didn't start trading with other civs until significantly later than usual. So, despite those problems, after I overcame Russia, I'm definitely the real power. I only wish naval warfare was more pronounced. Next game I'm going to be German or England on a land map and I might just bump it up to Monarch... haven't decided yet.

Overall, I'm surprised I've done so well because I remember the "even" difficulty on Civ3 (Monarch, I think it was) could give me fits at times. I really liked most of the changes to this version of the game (I thought I'd hate not having seperate strength/defense numbers but it's actually worked out well).

stealingjoy... try beating prince with random settings ie. no map type, leader, civ, climate or sea level... thats what im trying to do but im stuck on aztecs.

I have played Civ4 a lot (well over 300 hours) and I could never go back to Civ3 even though it was a great game.

Random settings can make the game more interesting, rarely have I had a start that was unplayable.
