Monarch difficulty...real world map (huge and by apolyton modders) I was playing as the English...

By about 100 A.D I had built Calais in her historic position to nick horsies off the French...

By about 400 A.D I lost my size 11 city of Calais (she was the largest city in my empire...just!) to the French by culture...considering the nearby London has 2 wonders in her AND aload of improvements and cultural rating it gives some idea of how much culture the French are pumping out

She will be mine again!

It makes me wonder if the channel had something to do with it.

Maybe water is a culture barrier. Like if London was on the same continent, Calais wouldnt have revolted. Just a theory.

I doubt it...because without the culture of London the Netherlands, Begium and a little of N.France would have been FRENCH so I couldn't have built there.

Note: settlers may only build a size 1 city...but if you get them to JOIN a city you add two population units...this is useful for expanding areas of your empire that lack a food bonus.

PLUS cities on a river as it were DON't NEED aqueducts...

I dont mean the "color" border, but rather the "power" of culture streching over from one continent to another. Im just guessing anyway, but I had a problem with something similar. I built a city near another capitol, and it was fine for awhile. Without warning nor civil disorder, it changed sides. I chalked it up to being overseas, too far from my capitol, too close to another.

Did you have any improvements in Calais?

I am playing a game right now with the French as neighbors. They seem to endevor to generate alot of culture, compared to other civs. You can take one of their cities, but theres a good chance they will get it back through revolution fairly quickly, if you dont rush-build some improvements.

Building near them requires temples and libraries to "combat" their cultural influance. Or your citizens want to defect.

My best guess is your citizens of Calais were drawn to the bright lights of Paris nearby.

Now you will have to get "imperial" on them and restore your rule!

Not just the overall culture of the civ is taken into acct. You'll have to consider the culture being produced by that particular city too. That's how I am abosrbing all those AI colonial cities (I am playing Bab) near my colonial cities on certain shared islands. Rush-building cultural stuff.

Yeah, culture is now more important than armies sometimes.

A temple, granary and walls...

I play as the French and I use my commercial bonus to rush build libraries and temples in border cities (and in cities I build near enimies to take their cities by culture easier) I have yet to lose a city to culture as the French (in fact I have yet to lose a city full stop as the French).

Actually, not to be a pr!ck, but I think your lying about the whole story. Why? Becouse I HIGHLY doubt you AND france start in your historic positions, and the map you played on must have been HUGE for calais to fit on the map with Paris and other French cities and not be 1-2 squares away. Maybe you could post a screenshot/savedgame?

Anyway, I once lost a size 8 city to culture but I think that was because it was just reverting back to it mother culture (I captured it...)

Why would the french have to start in France? English and French are designed to start near each other, and France could start in Germany, Rome or Russia and have this situation play out as they would still be in Europe. Don't call people liars without thinking.

I was just in the user-created map section and aparently there is now a map with the english in there historic starting place... but I would still like to see a save, I mean, if he has it, then that should be no problem, right?

PS- I am not trying to start anything, I just think its posible he lieing (however, there is no real reason to...), but in the end it dosen't really matter...

"The Splang" you may not WANT to give offense but you lay it on ****ing thick.

I haven't got a save with me owning calais -my autosaves copy over- but I have a save that has calais in it and shows ALL the civilisations having grown from their start site...the year is 1090 A.D and I'm starting to send out ships with settlers to found a far off empire as I'm desperately short of strategic resources...

"The Splang" you didn't e-mail me or even Private Message me...so it is only luck that I found that there was some call to defend myself.

In consideration that I was involved in getting things to work properly with the historic civs on a real world map, I think you show me alot of disrespect doubting me (plus the map IS huge as I made quite clear in my first post).

The save game is in a zip file...PM me if it doesn't work.

Im sorry if I sounded like a @$$, like I said, it really dosen't matter. Im weird because often when I really don't care about somthing, and ask someone about it, I come off sounding like a fanatical pr!ck with no life. I didn't really care whether you lied or not, thats why I sent no PM. Anyway, ill take your word for it that the save is real:beer: (my comp isn't working correctly, it keeps telling me "Page cant be found" wenever I try to D/L somthing)

Can you tell me how you got the civs to be in there correct positions? I doubt its luck because there a REAL low chance of that happening...

:shotgun: cool new smilie :goodjob:
