I think that most of us would agree that if everyone spoke the same language in the world, the world would be a whole lot more efficient. My question is, if we were to conform to one language, which language should it be? What do you think is the most efficient language in the world? The word efficiency can be interpreted differently, but please expand on why you chose your language.

P.S. you can combine languages as well, for example, you can take the written form of English and combine it with the vocal form of Russian.

Apparantly the click languages in africa are easier to speak, because you don't expend as much breath while talking. Just what I've heard.

I'm biased towards Japanese and English :hide:

I would say Pascal.

Esperanto was designed to be efficient, but it totally failed to take hold.

Right now the most efficient language would probably be English since so many people speak it all across the globe. Chinese would have a chance if it becomes more international, but the ideogram-based system is a huge hindrance since it's a lot less flexible than the alphabet.

It's like keyboards. Azerty/qwerty are not the most efficient keyboards, but try replacing them with the, what is it? Dvorak keyboard? Good luck.

What also makes it a huge hindrance is getting the tones right! :ack:

Here's an example:

妈 (Mother): mā
麻 (Hemp): má
马 (Horse): mǎ
骂 (Scold): mà
吗 (Question particle): ma

If dozens of millions of three-year-olds can manage it, I don't think it's that hard ;)

The problem with English is that if your voice develops in such a way, every sentence will turn into a tongue-twister because of the way they are binded to each other.

Because of my voice maturing and changing, I can no longer speak as clearly anymore, as several sentences turn into tongue-twisters.

Chinese - the tones and the characters are hard to remember, but the words are so much shorter, you don't have to spell, and the grammer RULES!

What is an efficient language ?
Does it have a simple grammar ?
Is it easy to learn ?
Does it use a small vocabularly where words have differnt meanings depending on context ?
Is it able to say much with few words ?
When some of these attributes contradict or disrupt each other, where are the priorities ?

Up to your interpretation.

The Queens English

That of course should read the Queen's English.
