What is the ultimate strategy game for you?

VIP was too tough to win as the Japanese, especially when the Americans started bringing the 15 carriers per turn in. :)

But I still liked it too.

I just picked up a copy of Kingmaker, read the rules again and realized what a great game that was.

Ah yes Chess is my all time favorite #1 game. Best AIs any game has to offer. My favorite way to play is head to head over the table. I always get the suspicion online opponents have chessmaster giving them moves alt-tab.
Though chess AIs are great I have more fun playing civ2 when playing a game by myself.
Online my favorite is Warlords III Darklords Rising.

So there's my 3 favorites in person/ alone/ internet.

I've gotta say that my favourite strategy game is still Civ2, though I have only played Civ3 once, and have yet to see why its better (apart from the graphics). I'll have to play it more to see how I go.

I also have to give the C&C series a mention. I really enjoyed playing the original, though it doesn't have the lastability of Civ2.

Never read "TKO in 3?"
In fact, there was a huge debate that the game was FAR to easy as JAPAN, and in fact, I won as Japan far more often, using the Midway/Take Pearl on turn 3 strategy.
Your POC lead would be to large for the USN to overcome by the turn 6 reinforcements, which now had to use Samoa to strike, so the Americans were easy meat.
If you ever play again, try this, you won't be so sure the USA is favored. ;)

Fun game, nothing better then watching giant armies wiped out by plague, seeing "bad weather delays attack" as a combat result on a sure win, or having your nobles sent about the countryside by peasant revolts! :crazyeye:

TKO in three? Must have been in the General? I might have to dig out the stash of them I have and look for it.

War at Sea was alot of fun too, and I have seen a few PBEM programs for it at the Wargamer magazine.

Another wildly fun game was Kremlin, only to watch as people bent over backwards trying not to get "their" party guy aged or exiled. All the while advancing your guy unwittingly! :D

Yep, Alan Moon wrote the article.

If you have a working PBEM for WAS, I'll give it a go, that's another great game.

I once won a Krelim game with a guy 90 years old!

Russian Campaign!

Then it's a toss-up between Third Reich, 1830 and the original Civilization board game by AH.

(It's weird to find their are still grognards around!)

I didn't like 1830, I always preferred Empire Builder. (Must have been the length of that sucker that I liked).

The Civ board game just didn't float my boat. But I loved the calamity cards!

AoA, try this site: http://members.aol.com/mjs68508/mwgp.htm

Pick up the War at Sea PBEM system and see if you like it.

Try the War on the Sea game too! It's a nice little text based War at Sea game.

Tried the game, I can't seem to figure out how to make selections for different thearters, it said left/right button, what the f*ck is that?

I would say, for strategy, my fav was Victory in the Pacific, with Russian campaign close (both AH wargames from the 1970s).

DUDE the "russian campaign" was my fav of all time, do you still have the game???
LETS PLAY!!!

Yep, still have it. ;)

We should step up a PBEM league, anybody interested in playing the old wargames by computer?

We would need a combat resolution system to use to make it work.

Try the space bar for the War on Sea game.
OK, i'll try that.

I was enjoying it anyway, even though I lost the campaign for lack of meeting the enemy! :crazyeye:

There are several third party dice rolling systems.

But which games are simple enough (not too many units) to play like that?

War at Sea
Kriegspiel (No Dice) But does anyone else have it?

At a loss right now for anymore titles right now... :(

I think VITP would be good, as the mechanics are rather simple.

The space bar thing worked BTW, so now you have me hooked on a stupid DOS game, you bastard!

I would love to try War and Peace, maybe Luftwaffe (I think this game would be ideal, setting up intercepts and bomber streams), mostly the older, less complicated stuff.

Well, depends on the amout of units, WAS would probaly be best.

Did you find the article?

I think it's in volume 17 or 18, Greenwood was still the editor at the time.

VITP is at home (Stationed at Drum), and half of my Generals are also there too... Haven't seen it yet, but will look for it for sure when I get home.

We could even play WAS over MSN Messenger, providing we find the time we can set it all up.

BUT, once I get back to the Flatlands, I will set up a VITP to test your theory. I'll be the U.S. of course! :p

OK, let's see if we can work out the WAS game.

Believe me, the VITP thing is tested, in fact, there wer at least three series replays done on VITP, ALL were decisive Japanese victories, if you do it right, the Americans simply CAN'T get the POC to win.

I will make sure to try it out on an unwary opponent.

I am available most times, just PM me on your schedule...

On a different note, did you ever try the game which tied WAS and VITP together? It had a paper map, and a few new ships added in (Surface Raiders).

Very tough for the Axis to win, but maybe with the Japanese strat. you are speaking of, it might be a little more fun...
