What is Your Favorite Unique Unit?

My favoute units. Not sure about using fast workers as early scouts (may be in a limited number of situations - say they have nothing else useful to do, or u need to scout out ur land as a matter of priority and u dont have hunting etc etc) but they might be useful in this regard late game when they are not required for other purposes.

Cossacks are great, they own every unit until rifles, which come a lot further down the line.

War chariots were scary even without the axe promo. Threaten someone with axe+spear combos and get them building axes, then bring out the chariots of war :D.

I don't see how praets are so great, but I only play MP, presumable the AI enjoys building archers (!). An aggro civ will polish up praets with the melee promo on axes. Praets are stronger against regular axes but the cheaper axes mean that the axe yielder comes out on top when he uses 2 to kill ur praet (if that makes sense :p). Also IW, if u have bronze is a bit expensive and means neglecting other useful early techs.

Musketeers and conquistadors are wonderful. 2-move defensive bonus units are just great. However presumably if u play from the anc era , most forests are chopped by this time, if the AI is clever enough to see the benefit of chopping that is :D.

Yah, jags have a very cool attack animation. I like the samurais' too.

Praetorians are clearly the best. The arguments that they are "overpowered" demonstrate this as much as anything else.

IMHO, Jaguars are certianly equal to swordsmen.
Agreed, but the problem is that a unique unit is supposed to be better than the unit it replaces. In my one game as Montezuma I was "lucky" enough not to have access to iron and therefore the Jaguars were very useful to me, but this hardly seems a common occurrence.

if you guys think praets are TOO strong then go into the xml and change their strength

I was a fan of legionaries in Civ III and I am a fan of Praetorians in Civ IV. If you want to conquer large amounts of territory early on there simply is no substitute.
That said, Immortals are quite nice for very early conquest and for control of the field. The AI and barbs use archers to patrol and escort a lot, so Immortals make great patrol units.
I also like the redcoat because they look so cool.

I'm partial on the samurai, they've been part of my more memorable games.

*sniff :'(

flamingzaroc121 I actualy think there to weak.
JrK Whats so great about the samuri. I played Japan in civ3 because the Samuri was better than the unit it replaced.

I love Berserkers for any water based map, combined with that disgusting Viking UB and the Circumnavigation bonus you can easily crush any coastal city before the opponent can see/react to it (unless they happen to have a very large scout network of Caravels/Galleons). Then you can move to crush the next one before anything but the opponents mounted units have a chance to garrison it. I love the longevity of their upgrades as well, Amphibious / CR Grenadiers will demolish any city you desire until the opponent gets Machine guns.

Just to point out (I mentioned it on page one this thread) that Berserkers also work well across rivers (not only coastal attacks). So set them up to attack across rivers. If the AI attacks you, they take the river crossing penalty, but you can attack cities across rivers with no penalty. So they are not only water based map units. Pangea with rivers are great too.

Praetorian here, they lawn mower unit as i like to call them. They help represent Rome so well, and thats great for history buffs like me.

I'm liking the Jaguar, I had to bad luck of not having Iron/Copper for 3 games behind eachother!! (And I was Aztec 3 times).
So I was able to keep the early prssure and win. :)

Keshiks anyone?
They are simply amazing, together with Ger, imo.
Two moves per turn on any terain is a killer and much more effective than a slow axeman rush (if you have high commerce reseource in your capital even more so), even if I encounter spears but thats the point of Keshiks, produce a lot of them fast, steady supply, so Idon't care about loosing few of them.. They were ment to be as a pillaging force but they are very effective for taking out cities, even tho they get -10% str
