What is your most feared Unique Unit?

Conquistadors.

As useless as they may seem for the human, it is the most deadly UU in the hands of the AI. Spain did sneak attack me in a CotM (the Austrian one), and managed to capture/kill about 20 Workers, and a city 6 tiles away from my borders. And no, it wasn't undefended; a Hussar and a MDI...


Berserks...not really. Never seen more than 2 in an AI ship. In the Middle Ages conquest, they are really a nemesis; but in unmodded, oh well.
All those Defenders are painful, no way to avoid triggering their GA.
Keshiks can be ugly when coming over mountain ranges, but that is a rare situation.
Sipahi are a indirect problem; the AI cannot defend against them before Infantry, and thus Ottomans often become a real runnaway Civ if on another landmass.

Oh, and the F-15 can be a pita as well. Really.
Had to face it one single time in my Civ carreer, admittedly; but, America as strongest AI, with their very own continent...I simply didn't manage to capture any coastal city. All bombers were shot down (yes, that did trigger Abe's GA), and ships didn't work since he had stacks of ships in all cities as well.
Of course, the F-15 isn't better for intercepting than the regular Jet - but, America builds tons of it...

Not perhaps the most dangerous of the UU's, but as I play mostly against AI, only the fast units seem to make real threat.
 
Though not skeeeered of any UU, the War Elephant has caused me serious
problems in the past :eek: :mad: .
 
Hoplite. They have great defense and no resource requirement. If the Greeks settle territory that I need, it is very costly to dislodge them. Nothing in the ancient age will overcome them without heavy losses or a big investment in catapults. And in the Medieval age, they're a cheaper, resourceless pikeman. I had a deity game that started me next to the greeks. They settled a city on hills in my first ring that also claimed some luxuries before I could build my first settler. I NEED that city, but I'll need a ton of units just to get that one city. I was working towards that, but then they built the great wall :cry:.

This is different than my experience. In one game... about 6 months ago, I had waves upon waves of ships full of Berserkers attacking my coast, after their initial surprise attack. The Vikings almost completely decimated my coastal territories (they seem to prefer to raze cities rather capture them). Most of these cities were away from the frontlines so were undefended or lightly defended.

Good point about the American F-15s - if America is a superpower in the modern age, the F-15s are a big headache due to the number of units that America tends to build, and the unit's aerial flexibility. I've also only seen this happened in one game where America had its own sizable continent towards the end of the game... but that's not often enough.

Otherwise, I generally don't "fear" traditional land units. Though the fast ones are so much more annoying than the slow, lumbering ones. In my own territory (most, if not all tiles should have been roaded), so my slowest units should be able to move as fast or faster to intercept the enemy, even the Chinese Riders. Plus, I mostly go the horsey route when building offensive units.

To be fair though, Conquistators are probably most annoying among the land units.

Most defensive UUs are tougher to take down, so I'll need more artilleries to soften them up. And even then, I'd probably suffer a few more casualties. But I hardly "fear" them.

Anyway, since each and every Civ game can be very different, each person's history and experiences with the game can be completely different. So for me, units with unconventional attacks are to be feared... I'm usually prepared for the simple land battle tactics of the AI.

But a strong offensive unit with amphibious attack is hard to defend against given that (1) my typical defense strategy consists of a small force of fast units to cover the cities that are away from the frontline, and (2) Berserkers pack quite a punch relative to the best defenders of the era.

My revised list would probably be: (1) still the Berserkers... and at a distant second, fast land units.
 
Numidian Mercs, hmm nobody thinks that they're dangerous?? Resourceless, same defense as hoplite, and that xtra attack point, the only thing is they're pretty costly, therefore they are my favorite AND most feared unit,

You attack a city, but fail to take it, you have a stack of weakened units, (Attacking Units) waiting there, next turn, a Merc comes out and takes a few more out, they have good defense and attack to waste immortals if there are any left,

THEY RULE
 
berserks, no contest. It realy is annoying when you play a huge map, continents; and the first contact with the vikings? Yep,amphibious assault on my capital. And they actually captured it. :sad:
 
In terms of the units that makes the AI fear? Hoplites and Sipahi. My early expansion with the Greeks was far more secure, and thus, larger than it otherwise would have been. With Sipahi, I didn't even bother waiting for artillery after the opening salvos in some of my wars, but just rolled through their territory.

As for who I fear? I would have to say the Expendables. They're just strongenough to keep me offbalance in my plans to dominate elsewhere, while I wait for this Persian UU to become obsolete.
 
I don't fear AI UUs so much as get annoyed at them. Tops on the annoying list are Hoplite, Numidian Merc and Legionary - all the d=3 ancient era units. If I have Greece, Carthage or Rome as neighbors, I know I'm not going to be able to charge in with 10 horsemen and expect to win. I generally have to wait until I have trebs and med infs and/or knights.
 
Hoplites and Immortals scare me. :eek:
 
immortals are so lethal, but conquistadors can jump right into your territory and pillage your major resources before you can do something.
 
I think my most feared Unique Unit is the Mounted Warrior, simply because it's fast and the Iroquois can get it quickly. The Legionary, Hoplite, Immortal and Numidian Mercenary are also close up, since if they win, it will trigger their Golden Age. Knight units can be scary, but I tend to be well-prepared by the time enemy AIs get their chivalric unique units. The Ottoman Sipahi is quite threatening, but I've not yet had a game where the Ottomans were adjacent to my own civilization -- they were a runaway AI before I had the other civilizations dogpile them.

Samurais. They were really powerful in my last game as Ottomans. Knights are useless because they can't retreat and my stack of catapults, MDI and Pikemen were slaughtered by fast moving Samurais.
I wasn't able to cause any serious damage to Japan until I got Sipahis.

The best way to deal with MWs is to trade Iron to the Iros. They'll almost completely stop building MWs :wallbash:.
The AI doesn't care for the speed, and thus the choice is between a 3.1. and a 3.2. unit for the same costs...
Hiawatha will get some MWs because of the GA trigger, but mostly Swords.
