What it's all about

These forums show that we have very different ideas of what Civ2 is all about. Can you give yours in just a few words ? Wanna hear from all kinds of players. Mention what kind of games you normally play [MP? spaceship? HOF? etc], maybe also which phase of the game you have in mind. For example, I'd say -

"I play mostly GOTMs and aim for early conquest. For me, Civ2 is mostly about fast, early growth." Though it is tempting to go on about making crusaders, or investing, or transportation, etc...

I play SP and mostly go for large, sprawling empires. Fast expansion is important, but not at the expense of future city size. Conquest is fun, but the real thrill is in delivering that load of Uranium for 4,000 plus coins. That is the real challenge.

In Diety, you have 420 turns, so use them to build the biggest empire you can.

...yeah, that's me alright :D

in my games i tend to go for record fast expansion strategies.

sometimes i go for come-from-behind types of games. for example i use the cheat menu to start each civ with 20 settlers except me, or a fully improved size 127 city, except me, or i will give them a big turn advantage by hitting the space bar for some number of turns before starting. in such games the trick is generally to catch up before someone gets his spaceship landed.

SP, perfectionist, at D+1. It's not about forming an empire, but creating a perfect little (emphasis on little) civ. Racing through the tech tree as fast as possible is another goal.

I am a perfectionist. Or as I once described myself: a disorganized micromanager. Because I take so @$%#(*&@ long to play turns, I rarely can finish a game that is not an OCC anymore. Everything is driven toward efficiency. I will track and plan destinations and routes for my vans. I work peaceful diplomacy to the fullest until I am confident I have massive superiority over an opponent (or until the very end in OCC).

If the situation looks favorable, I will sometimes go for an early conquest game where rapid ICS expansion is the early key. Because the time commitment is small and the challenges constantly changing, I enjoy difficult (D+n) successsion games where I tend to be a heavy-trade peacenik (although if the situation is right I can put up a decent fight. There was that time I wiped out the entire indian civ in one turn... )

I have never played anything but single player games. I have only played scenarios as part of GOTMs. 40-50% of all the games I have ever played have been GOTMs.

I prefer to win by Space Ship and with little warfare but I am not a peace nik. I typically pick a few of my rivals as trading partners (Rational Civilized ones as much as possible); the rest I will conquer if they annoy me or if I need their territory for expansion.

Thanks to Peaster, I am expanding more rapidly than I used to but still with most cities far enough apart for little overlap.

I love OCC. Initially for its challenge, and now for its quickness (in real time). The vast majority of the non-GOTM games I have played in recent years have been OCC. I wish to someday have played every civ on the large map of earth as OCC. I have so far played as Celts, Zulu, Japanese, Persians, and English. (The games as English and Celts both had the other civ as an AI rival and were most interesting.)

I love making custom maps and playing on them. I have made some 2 dozen custom maps but have only had a chance to play on a handful of them. Two of my largest custom maps have been used for GOTMs so far (GOTM53:HaftJazire and GOTM55:Butterfly).

I will typically play a new game each evening, going until 1750-1850. I like to try to build all of the early wonders, not so easy to do on deity. About the only games I finish are the GOTM's.

geofelt: 1750AD in one evening ? That's fast ! Before I discovered civ2 on the net, my favorite "house rule" was - I lose if the AI builds a Wonder. But IIRC I played at Emperor level (and probably not very well).

All: To me, it is surprising that most players have responded about ways they enjoy civ2, rather than about their basic strategies. My enjoyment of a civ2 game comes from aiming at some overall goal (usually early conquest, but it could be GOTM score, or almost anything) and trying to choose the best strategy for that goal.

Aye, and therein lies the rub!! Most of us play Civ2 exactly because we do enjoy playing it. Enjoy, thrill, challenge, goal, are all part of the fun of playing Civ2. If the fun goes out of it, one simply does something else for entertainment.

What's it all about? My next ruler name could be the Hokey Pokey.

I go to 1000 A.D before I continue. It seems like a good saftey net for me.

I get all the essential wonders like Pryamid, J.S. Bach, Great Library, Leonardo's Worshop. I don't care if my opponent gets the rest because I defeat them later. And I'm sorta like Tim.

Imagine fine-tuning 120 or so cities late in the game, making sure they have harbors or creating the right foods. That they have the right units and numbers of spy. Usually when I get over 80 cities I do have 'one' spy guarding my latter cities because I should have defeated my other opponents by then and military units under a democracy is a waste of resources.

Not really, but one or two adds up over time.

Hey Good People,

I've been working on putting my site together for all versions of civ. I've made some improvements based on some suggestions already -- but I want to have other fans give me ideas about what I can do. My mission is simple: archive files about the game and its history and offer related news no one else spends much time with.

But I get the feeling from some who have contacted me already that there is an opportunity here to build a few fan related portions into the site. Maybe you could take a look at it and tell me what you think:

Civilization Partisans Hideout

I'm of course still writing the pages and had this site before it fell into oblivion when it was just Civ II. But now I've incorporated FreeCiv, FreeCol and will be posting strategies and so forth. I suppose my question is what is it about the game that I'm leaving out for this kind of site? Players obviously like GOTM's -- but also scenarios, should I feature GOTM's for scenarios? Should I offer some kind of hall of fame or award for high scores? These seem very time consuming but also repetitive for what is offered here too.

I guess I just want to fill in the gaps.

Thanks for helping,

CivPartisan
