The US followed the same basic common law and so similarly required an act of a State Legislature to approve a divorce until around the same time, give or take a few years depending on the state.
That does not change the fact that divorces where the man was given sole custody of the children and the mother could not even visit were a very big deal circa 1890.
The father was also the one to keep the children after a divorce in pre-Christian antiquity, when divorce was easier and more common than it is today.
But when divorce is generally restricted to a class of people who don't usually look after their own children anyway it doesn't say much about attitudes in wider society.
