What language do you think in.

English, but sometimes random french or gaelic words will pop in my mind if I'm not careful. Latley, gibberish has been invading my head though though.

English. Sometimes I think (and speak aloud) some Persian swear words.

I'm surprised by the number of foreigners who think in english. Why do you think in english.

I consider both finnish and english to be "mother tongues" to me... Obviously learnt finnish at home, and my parents had me going to an american school when I was real young and we lived in Spain, so I picked up english to a higher degree than most... It really feels natural, and sometimes thinkin just happens in english, sometimes finnish...

English because it is the only language that makes sense to me. I do sometimes think words I know in foreign languages in that language though. I take up words easily and confuse people alot.

You lived in Spain, but you didn't learn Spanish?

Yup. Like I said, I went to an american school, where spanish lessons started at third grade... We moved back to Finland after I had just finished second grade...

Welsh or English depending on context.

Usually (when I think in words) it`s German or English with German being my automatic preference.
I just spent a month in the US, after about a week preference switched to English :crazyeye: .

A lot of my thinking is nonverbal though, thinking in words takes too long.

Depands, if i've been speaking in English lately, then i'd think in english. But if i was speaking polish lately, then i'd think in polish. i OUNCED thought in spanish. It was pretty weird....

I once though in an Indian accent

I don't believe that we think in a language, actually, but that we draw upon language when thinking. By the same token, we draw upon visual images/manipulation when thinking but we don't think in visual systems.

The 'language generator/processor' aspect of our brain is a somewhat distinct part and we're perfectly capable of thinking without actually making use of it. We tie the words to concepts, but we hold concepts separate from words. There are types of brain damage where people lose the ability to access language completely, but they don't lose the ability to think

That completely fits my subjective experience of trying to verbalize my thoughts. ("I try to think, but nothing happens!") I'm pleasantly surprised to see a brain-o-phile like you confirm it.

Silly? How so? Deep down, everyone are really thinking in binary language. That's how the computer 's brain works...a network of 0/1 or on/off. The computer is actually thinking in binary language although what you see on the screen isn't binary (English, Spanish, Graphic, or whatever). Our human brain is just simply more sophisticate than that, but the underlaying technique is very similar.
