For those of you who have completed a game (or multiple games), what method did you win by?

To learn from my mistake:

For those of you who have completed a game or multiple games, by which methods have you won?

I play only with the conquest victory condition on

Why do people do that? Is cIV only fun for them as a war game? I love that I don't HAVE to fight in cIV if I don't want to- reminds me of playing as the Intellectual faction in Alpha Centauri- I used to love achieving transcendence with like 5 cities.

Yes I only like it as a wargame, so far...

I am a noob on the civ series so I have yet to find flavor in winning by diplomatic/peaceful meanings

As I see Spaceship victory is the easiest one. Most people won the game like that.

I have a game saved around the year 1800 and I only have 3 civs left to conquer for a conquest win.

Grammar police! Stop! Hands off the keyboard!

You ended the title of your post in a preposition. You should have written "By which methods have you won?"

Sorry... just felt like being a dork... carry on then.

You know, maybe some people are not from the US, or I go even further their mother tongue might not even be English. (like me :) I hope I made at least 1grammar mistake now :) )

I am trying to go through and achieve each victory condition on the easy levels before I move back up to Noble or Monarch. I want to see what strategies I need to adjust from Civ III days. So far I have gotten spaceship and culture (that was fun). I played the culture victory game on a Standard Map - 7 AIs, and completed the game in about 1980 with three legendary cities and I did not fight a single war. In fact I only fought 2 battles! both against barbarians in the early game. After that - I just had about 8 cities churning out infrastructure. Now I know it was just Chieftan, but it was NEVER possible to play a game without at least a war or two in Civ3. At some point the AI would just attack you.

No "by cheating" option?

:p

I won with culture in MP. That was cool.

We were 6 on the same continent. I was isolated quickly to the north and only could settle 6 cities. Everyone was tearing each other and as I was protected by my southern neighbour who was the leader in score the whole game. We traded a couple of things so he did not invade. I was also only 3rd in score the whole game. But Three of those cities were pumping wonders and great people the whole game. I got it 20 turns before the end. The other guys did'nt check the victory condition screen i guess...

Having played two full games, now, I've had one diplomatic victory, and one time victory. Maybe it's because I'm playing on Warlord, or because I'm only learning how best to make my civ more efficient, but I didn't get to the spaceship techs until about the 21st century, by which time I was already close to a diplomatic victory (in my first game), and didn't have time to complete the spaceship (in my second game; though that was on a "tiny islands" archipelago, meaning there was very little in the way of hammer-producing terrain).

I have won two cultural victories, one space ship, one domination, and one conquests. All were on Noble, 'cos my objective is to get every victory to have a good feel of the game before moving to harder difficulties.
My Conquest victory was done in 800BC with a score over 31,000 ! :)

I've only played two full games at this point both on the Noble difficulty. The first I won by Space Ship and the second I won by Diplomatic means. I have noticed a few things about the game though that I'm not sure wether or not I like yet.

Firstly, early wars seem to be almost impossible. Even if you wait until you get Swordsmen it is still very difficult to do because of the tech pace. The units become obsolete very soon it seems to me. I haven't been able to conquer my own continent yet, which I did regularly by the time I had Knights in CivIII.

Secondly, religion makes diplomacy very easy in this game I find. Found a religion early, and spread it throughout the continent. That's basically how I won my second game diplomatically. Not to mention the extra cash you get if you build a shrine and the spy potential of having all your enemies cities under your religion.

Thirdly, the interface seems unfinished to me. I know it is supposed to be easy to navigate and user friendly to the newer people to civ, but I have had a hard time with it and still am. I just get the feeling that it was unfinished. I prefer the old CivIII interface much more, but that will probably change as I play more CivIV :)

Don't get me wrong I love playing so far, but I don't know. The game seems to just move way to fast for me. I guess I'll try ramping up the difficulty and playing a Large instead of Standard map. Maybe that will help with the tech pacing.

Update on the game that I had going: At about 1850, I got the message that I won a Domination victory. I had about 80% of the map saved under my control. What are the exact conditions for a domination victory?
