It could have used a greater sense of progress, with the scene gradualy shifting further foreward in time as the intro went on.

Thats exactly what i ment!!!!!!!!!
Somethin glike RoN but not this idiotence!!!!
The only reason it took 2/8 is for the music and for its excelent starting.
It isnt even a Civ's intro this!

Its growth of humanity guys. It didn't stop in england!

England? What do you mean...?
The scene is somewhere in the northern part of Greece/modern Albania AFAIK, if that's what you're talking about.

It's nice, but nothing spectacular.

- The spreading lights on the globe according to the settling sites of great civilizations are a fine idea.
- The music is great.
- The battle scene and the ships look very good.
- Having arrows "guide" the camera is a great idea for the transitions between the battle scenes.

Several other things are a little strange however:

- The intro has no overarching theme. First we see lights symbolizing the spread of civilization across the globe. then we see a battle scene. Then a crowning (which apparently takes place while the battle rages on). Nothing joins these scenes together, the remain separate, seemingly just kludged together.

- Who on earth thought that slamming a blurred stone pillar into the player's face would be a good idea? Was this a placeholder because they couldn't manage to finish the graphics for this part? Was it an oversight? This part looks surprisingly amateurish.

- The crowning scene was a poor choice imho. It might have worked as a victory movie, but for the intro Iwoul have liked something about the progress of civilization, not about one guy being crowned. I wonder why the put this one in. I actually suspect that the old man is meant to be Sid, and the new king is meant to be Soren. (Civ4, as the first game with him in the lead, can be seen as his "crowning").

As much as I love the game (and i do, immensely :) ), the movies are not its strongest part ...

I always took the crowning to represent you as leader taking over the reins of your civilization, with the approval of your people.

I know the geography of my country but didn'e it showed an england king and a mediecal siege tower?

It looked pretty greek to me, although you may be right. I'll check next time I start the game.

But anyway, I too think they could have made a better feeling of going through time, like the opening in civ3 with the Tower of Babylon... That was cool.

Don't bother, I've checked. The "camera" descends toward Greece, goes through the clouds, and there's your battle.

It makes me with they'd spend more on gameplay development than this and wonder movies. not impressed.

quite good, but nothing breath holding.

Adequate. Nice space shot, but the battle in Illyria (ancient name for Adriatic Coast) combined with the "crowning" thing, was a bit lame.

I thought it was o.k.

It's not too bad, but if you want a good cinematic, watch Blizzard's! :goodjob:

Probably my favorite cinematic of all time though is the final NOD victory movies for Tiberian Sun.
I still have that saved on my hard drive. It's just so cool, with the space base being destroyed, followed by the Tiberian-ization of the entire planet.

And yeah, Blizzard makes really great cinematics. I think the WCIII Human campaign conclusion is a powerful clip. The intro with the footman and grunt fighting is also very symbolic. Not to mention Starcraft's ingame cutscenes.

The Civ IV intro just has no overarching theme, I would venture it's a battle in ancient Greece with a victorious leader returning and reclaiming the crown (likely after being driven out of the country). When they panned up, it should have transitioned to a modern cityscape, then streaking aircraft overhead, with satellites in the sky and the Civ IV logo. That would have tied it in with the overarching theme of history.

civ3 had better intro. this one felt incomplete. it just stopped at the crowning. i was expecting it to continue to the modern era.

but it's not too important. i usually view game intros only once, unless they are really really good

I agree, it could have been much better. What should of happened is after the camera pans around the king, the Greek becomes a medieval city, then it goes into a building and its an industrial age factory, then it leaves the building to show the spaceship/ICBM/other modern marvel outside. Then it turns and the kings still standing there. This gves the feel of progress, and represents you (the king) watching your civ grow.

I didn't think it was too good. I wanted to click out of it before I'd seen it fully and I've never watched it again - though that might've been because I want to use the game.

Some intro movies (IMO, the Dawn of War intro movie was the best ever - though they hired out a 3D production studio for a month to do it) you can watch several times - even, dare I say it, every time the game loads. This one took too long, didn't seem to have a purpose, and wasn't even that pretty.

But I don't get games for the intro movies. I wouldn't have really minded if there wasn't one at all.
