Iron: Rails, factories, the best offensive unit of the Ancient Ages and the Medieval age (not including Cavs).

Iron.
It's important (although not crucial) for ancient/medieval age warfare, but, once you get to the industrial age, it's needed for factories and railroads- something I can't live without.

Iron. I would rather have medieval infantry than horsemen, and I would rather try to win with medieval infantry than survive to a later age and win with infantry, for example. Iron also allows for factories. Horses are only good for horsemen without iron or saltpeter. Saltpeter would only provide musketmen. Coal is useless without iron. Oil by itself only provides ships. Aluminum is pretty useless by itself. Uranium by itself only provides nuclear submarines and the Manhattan Project. If I were playing as Egypt, Iroquois, or Hittites, horses would probably be more important.

i think the poll might be better if it was...
What resource is important for its era?

Becuase i can conquer the game with iron in the
beginning before i even get to/or need any other resources.

shows why i am loosing in the game then.. i chose horses! better start SoDing those iron resourses.

-coal! always coal!

-i get panicky if i can't get my armies where i need them to be and without railroads they may as well be wearing lead socks.

I don't understand the votes for coal. Coal is used for building railroads, factories, and coal plants. Those are important, granted. The thing is that you can't build railroads or factories without iron! No iron means coal is valueless.

Arathorn

Iron! Great for offense early on, later it helps for improvements. Second best would be rubber.

Ferrum! And of course - Arathorn is right, you can´t build rails without iron so coal is useless alone (except for the shield bonus).

There's stg strange in this thread: many people say iron is required for factories, but the civilopedia says coal is required for factories. So, do they require coal or iron or both?

Iron for factory, coal for coal plant, nothing for hydro and solar plant, uranium for nuclear plant.

If you have the right offensive resources then you can take the other ones by force. :goodjob:

Wine, of course!

Oh, you mean strategic resources? In that case I'll go along with most people and vote Iron. Although Horses is a must-have too.

If you have Iron, Horses are easy to get - Swords/MDI, small casalties thanks to Pikes. The other way around is much worse (unless you're Greece or Carthage).

Iron. No doubt. You simply need it throughout the game; Horses/Coal/Saltpetre, even Oil, can be imported. Expensive, but no real problem.

Iron, good for early age wars. Needed for factories and rails.
