Self-esteem seems beside the point. Don't know enough about "character counts" to comment, but if you mention this in response to my idea of "encouraging students to stick up for each other", then my gut response is not to pursue this with a top-down approach. Let students take the initiative, bottom-up, grass-roots. If you're a student, start a buzz in your own school.
