I used to browse the boards a lot in the Civ 3 days. And I remember all the crap we had to deal with with Civ 3 and especially Civ 3 "Play the World". Civ 3 PTW was a pretty mess.

Now hear me out... I realize/understand the problems with people being irritated with crashing, and sound stuttering. But the other complaints garnering bazillions of reads and comments is ridiculous. The outrage over the mislabeled play disk? Did we all suddenly turn into "village idiots" and not be able to adapt to putting in Disk 1 instead? Are you that dumb as to not try the "other disk" when it says "please insert x disc"? Did you develop terminal cancer because that disk was mislabeled?

Since when did pc gamer's vision become so tunnel visional that they can't adapt to a new interface? The inexorable cries that Firaxis employees should be shot because "I don't like such-and such icon" is insane!

I am appalled at the candor of people criticizing the tiniest parts of Civ 4 as if their mother had been just shot. There is so much to appreciate in Civ 4, especially compared with the dreck we get from gaming companies today - that I am appalled to see this level of ********. I'd expect it on Gamespy's arcade forums, but not from the more mature players of Civ Fanatics.

See, now you've caused me to go and create my own whiny thread.

I sincerely hope that the majority of people here can start appreciating all the excellent-ness that Civ IV has to offer. For those having problems running the game - I'm not yelling at you. I understand that kind of frustration.

You are my new hero, jpinard. I shall name my first born after you... Jpin Ard Ward...

From what I understand from the mature people on here, on release of a game these kinds of things are to be expected. Or at least thats what I was told.:crazyeye:

Beautifully said.. now if only someone could do something about the 15 year old political activists destroying every single thread in here I would be even happier.

I totally agree, this is a whole new direction for Civ4 with a complete rebuild of the entire game. So to expect it to be completly flawless from day one is rediculous!

If you come across someone whining about all the bugs and problems with the game just ask them if they would have preffered the developers to have kept the game to themselves for another year or two? :D

Personally, I am utterly thrilled to be with Civ4 from the beginning and be a part of such a large community, as everyone has the chance of helping to mold Civ4 into being even better!

Lets all celebrate "We love King Sid day!" :goodjob:

I'm not only having trouble running the game, I'm having trouble trying to learn what is needed to run the game. People have gone out and bought new cards in the hopes that it would run. They've bought duplicate copies of the game in the event that they had a bad disk. They've bought new CD-ROM drives to read the disks. They've bought whole new systems. They've toiled for days fiddling with registry settings, ini files, pak and unpak rituals, deletions, removal of programs, reinstallations, downloading drivers, and updating specs. They've even, for God's sake, turned off their virus protection and disabled firewalls — all in an attempt to get a stupid game to run on computers that should have run it straight out of the box. People are doing workarounds and jerry rigged "fixes". They're playing the game with jerkiness, stuttering, crashes, and memory leaks. If the people responsible for releasing this do not end up facing a class action law suit for the unnecessary time, expense, and anguish they've caused people, it will be more than they deserve.

Yes I would, Blizzard does it and I understand why.

Sorry, but I have yet to find a forum where people dont voice their opinion wether its good or bad. To say they should not be allowed to do it is rediculous. I havent complained too much but I have had my words taken waaay outta context by people playing high and mighty on here. And I am highly addicted to stating my opinion. Big shocker there huh? One person says they are having difficulties on this forum right now and people are jumping down their throats shouting 'RESPECT FIRAXIS! I LOVE THE GAME!!'
I know there are bad posters too but c'mon man, most people are being curtious and the annoying one pop in from both sides.

As for disc 1, yeah its not hard but... isnt it Firaxis's job to get the sticker right? honestly? or take 2 or whomever, please dont correct me on whos fault it is to prove you know it. I dont care, I dont want to work at these companies or know about them, I want them to put the right damn sticker on.

Yep then other members say, "Quit posting on Discussion forums! We are discussing the look of the rifle on the Marine damn you! (j/k I enjoyed that thread, but it is what people are shouting) Then saying you should upgrade your crappy computer. And my favorite, WE SHOULD HAVE EXPECTED THIS. lol thats great.

LOLOL that is hilarious... I love how some people on forums like this say "its not the programmers fault, its the publishers!!!" WHO FREAKIN CARES! lol I dont care who it is, and I sure as hell dont care if you know who's problem it is lol.

My two cents:
Whining about gameplay changes and small things like the disc labeled wrong is somehow childish.

I personally know 3 people with 3 year old laptops who all meet the requirements. The 2 with the 64MB GeForce 4 GO can not see the resources in the city screen and when selecting a settler properly (only 2 bread symbols on every tile).
The one with the Radeon M 7500 64MB has proper leaderheads but white terrain and black sea with only the woods/ jungle/ special resources visible. All of them worked for 10-15 hours to fix the problem but all the suggestions how to fix it did not help. If searching the forums you will notice that some very abundand graphic cards from the only 2 relevant graphic chip companies have problems.
It works on my GeForce 6600, but it crashes when I want to return to my desktop.

I have a laptop with a Radeon 7500 myself and I played on it:
Jedi Knight 3, Knights of the old Republic 1 and 2, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, Neverwinter Knights and many other games from their retail versions without any technical problems, patches only removed gameplay bugs or changed balancing.

Imo the release was rushed by TakeTwo and some SERIOUS technical bugs were simply not removed in time. As they knew these problems for sure (heck, I mean they must have tested it on some of the numerous graphic cards with problems) I am positive we will see a patch within 1 month.
I can understand the uproar from all the people who feel (and probably were) cheated. :thumbdown

Thats nice... who is blizzard and what do you understand?

The game is shippable, this means there is bugs that the developers know about but it is possible to complete the critical path of a game therfor it ships. Right now, they will be sitting hammering away at there little keyboads, working on patch number 1.

I didnt attack your right to have your say (although the forum rules do state that "Your rights to Freedom of Speech don't apply here.") I was mearly getting on about the doom and gloom squad hell bent on making Civ4 sound like the WORST game ever, when it is clearly not! :P

Mislabled disc is no biggie but the game was definitely rushed with a lot of technical issues. The designers should have worked overtime to make things right, Thursday mini fix was a start but things have been quiet since then. My apologies if they have been working on it, if that is the case, communicate more to let us know you are at least trying. Fraxis should consider having a more open beta, so insane fanatics can work the bugs out before release. People feel they bought a product that doesnt do as advertised, hard to blame them. If I bought a tv that only recieves stations on odd numbers or has a green picture, I wouldnt be happy either.

are they any worse than the gushers who are proclaiming it the best game ever - which it is clearly not?

Blizzard is the company that makes Warcraft and the Diablo 1 & 2... they may have a couple more games but I cant think of anymore atm. They ensure a game is practically 99% bug free before releasing it. If Blizzard made the game you can bet you'll be playing the game when you get home and the reqs are 100% correct. Now as a result they dont crank out the games like alot of other companies but when they do it is high quality. I hear there are some issues in WoW with bugs and such but it is their first try at an MMORPG. And those stand alone in their bug infested online environments.

Yeah after the one liner concerning my opinion on your previous post I began the paragraph concerning the main topic. Who it seems from my POV to be saying that people shouldnt be on here complaining on a forum related to the thing that they are complaining about in his opinion.

And this is why things are so esculated. This isnt the best game or the worst game. Thats an opinionated ranking system.

I like how people expect a game with so many things, from tiny to the large and so many details to be perfect day one.

Complex games like these usually got problems just because of their size and scope. It happens often.

People compare Blizzard to this... Blizzard doesnt make as nearly as deep or complex games.

The only complain for Civ 4 is the memory leak issue. My computer can start the game with no problem, run the video with no sound problem and load the whole map creation pretty quick. However, after 30 minutes of gameplay (with large map), the memory leak issue kicks in... FPS drops like crazy, and stops me from playing.
I have been a PC gamer with the days of 486 machine playing Simcity 2000.
I never have any real big problem with any Sid Meier's games. To me, the name of Sid Meier is equal to quality games. But this time... this memory leak problem is somewhat a dissapoinment and it clearly shows Civ4 dev team didn't get a lot of time to do testing and debugging. I rather wait for another couple months (sometime like Christmas when I have holidays to enjoy the game) to have a Civ 4 that runs prefect.
