with this ?

The Egyptian woman is to the north.

No resources to my north (am sending scout to the north west).
Desert on the peninsula to the east.

Looks like a pain of a start.

Blue and Green are cities i'd like to make later on, but I want to expand towards Hatty first to claim land but how to do it. She is just off the top centre by one or two squares so what is shown is what I have to work with.

I have copper so can make spears to counter the war chariots.

But where do I put my cities with the lack of resources and all that desert?

Playing vanilla civ4 as Bismark on a continents map, small size, low sea level on Prince.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

EDIT: I don't have AH yet or IW so they might appear in the empty spaces (hopefully), would you say train them next and put a city where existing resources are or put one in the empty space and hope they appear? ARGHHH so many options I dunno what to do......

My gut feel is to grab that Gems site as soon as possible if that's do-able. Gems on a river is not to be sneezed at. You'll need some culture in there to push back Hatty's borders.

You're right in that this map doesn't quite fit (to my mind) as neatly as some others, with resources and rivers not placed in convenient spots for great optimal city placement.

Food for thought;

Thanks for the reply.

The creative trait of Hatty (and she's the buddist leader) worries me a bit about putting a city so close to her capital. I might try for stonehenge but I don't have stone (industial though) so just a oracle would do.

At least if I get the city in place I should be able to fill in the space behind by the time the culture starts to trouble the city then its :hammer: time.

Oh would you make 1 a military city? Most of the city's look to be commerce/hybrid cities.
City 2 with no resources would just be a commerce city since it has very few hills and will need farms later on to work all of its squares..

Not a lot of hills, are there? Workshop/Farm combo for city 1? Close to the frontline, chopping will chiurn out extra hammers early on to rush a forge and barracks.

Well I went for position 1....

Close call

Both settlers on that square, so will have to deploy there 1W of what you drew.

Hatty as you can see is closer than I remembered, I also can get 2 more resources in this cities bigcross so will be important for the :hammer: stage. Looks to have nice number of hills and with river and a food source should be a really nice city. I forsee making this my capital once the island is mine (only me + hatty on it so must be 4 of them on another island, or 2 more islands), central location and looks like it would benifit from capital bonuses more than current capital.

EDIT: Uploaded then linked wrong image so attached as attachment and updated link.

Oh yeah, ELEPHANTS! hehe death to war chariots!

I don't think your city as any chance to survive cultural pressure if you put it there ...
capitol+creative+boudhism = 9pt culture/turn minimum ...
which is a lot in the early game ... You won't be able to counter it even with : library, monastery, temple, .... means only 5pt from building + 1 pt from religion ...
elephants come too late ...

Maybe too late but I think Glouglou is right about cultural pressure. Wouldn't be the end of the world to let Hatty clear away the jungle while you build units.

Well, blue should certainly be a military city. I'd move it 1 W; no need for that coast and ocean in a production city. As a bonus that will make it easier to irrigate the corn, and farm the plains if desired.

I think it will be close initially, but chop rushing / whipping library, oblisik, temple, monesty will make it hold out enough to work the west/south/east squares.

I'm tempted to try for Stonehenge there through chopping...

Do you think i'd just be better off heading west to claim the elephants and to give a bit more space between borders?

you don't need to fight a cultural war. Kill her, and the problem is solved.
I see you're gunning to IW, which is fine. Hopefully you're building barracks and axemen in Berlin?
It's no use keeping a single neighbour, she won't trade any tech. So she can just as well die.
