what to look out for in a MP-game

Played a few hours. Horrible first hour with some disconnections and a game that got stuck after only 40 turns. But second game went lot smoother, and i save now every 3 turns in rotating savegames. We were about 100 turns far, and reloading a game worked.

What ive also learned is that number of religions depends on the map, not on the number of players. We are 5 on a small map (we idnt include an AI cause its lame), but 4 religions are able to be found. As ethiopia i offcours already have a full established religion while the others are just founding pantheons :p

Still have to work out who gets first move when it comes to turns. Also some ruines didnt give a bonus when discovered...

They always give a bonus; you just don't get the pop-up.

Likely was free culture or gold if you couldn't tell, keep an eye on what those are before you grab the ruin next time and you'll see if they go up.

Turn order doesn't really affect anything other than wonder construction.
If you two people finish a wonder on the same turn, the person higher in the turn order gets it.

When it comes to moving units, you just gotta be fast.
If there's someone with poor ping in the game, war is going to suck bigtime due to the lag. You can see ping in the lobby, and also in the game by clicking on the "Single Player Score List" (the overlay list on the top right that shows players' score).

Same thing sometimes for stuff like Pantheons. I don't know how many times i've been on the pantheon screen deciding what to pick and someone picks before me that turn, meaning i now have to wait till more faith has been accrued to pick one.

yeah i see where the ping is, and its mostly stable for all of us.

Where exactly can you see the turn order? Religionwise its not a problem if you're ethiopia :p

ah ok. ill look out for it when the wars erupt. Although i dont have much to fear: i took defender of the faith as a belief, and combined with spirit of adwa, im gonna get 40% when defending :)

That's good for turtling up games i suppose, but if you don't stay on top or near the top of science and production, a good player or two will swallow up their neighbors become huge.
Once that happens and their production skyrockets, all the defense in the world isn't likely going to do much for you when you get overrun with tons of units.
And if you do make it to later eras, remember, a nuke doesn't care about those bonuses.
If you get an A-Bomb or Missile dropped on you, it'll be devastating regardless.

My point being: take out your neighbors if you can...unless you can amass a huge tech lead, it's really hard to win science victories as most games end well before due to domination.

Yeah i know, but im going for cultural. So i hope to win before uranium gets discovered used. And we arent that great players, one of us is a beginner who just has the game for two weeks, the others mostly play on prince like me.

I just dislike domination victories in general. If i wanna squash everyone on the battlefield, ill just play Total War :p

Ah, cultural :crazyeye:
This is so tough to do in MP, pretty much impossible with good players.

It's not so bad if you are playing with friends who are more into building and less war, though.

Here is the thing about cultural victories - with expert play, a science victory will happen long before a cultural victory. Like dozens or even scores of turns (guessing.) Unless there are hidden game mechanics that the pool of experts I am a part of totally missed...

Yeah ive noticed yesterday that cultural points goes a lot slower than in SP. But its a bit too late to switch now. I'll just keep building wonders. its not so much about winning this game (ive already won as ethiopia) :p

Done another session yesterday, and we are about 220 turns far, and everything goes quite smooth. Something i discovered is that you cant liberate citystates, which is a bit of a bummer...

We are now in the year 1914, so about 305 turns far if i recall correctly. If i can survive the mayhem they will throw upon me, i can win in 30 turns (15 turns for 2 policies, 15 for the project itself)

Probably nobody intrested, but ill post it anyway.

The game ended after 356 turns with a cultural victory for ethiopia (aka me :p )

The stability of the game was good overall, but towards the end we had some bad experiences. Probably best advice is next time to play on quick instead of standard pace :p

Yeah standard takes too long normally, unless you are doing it with good friends who can play at regular times, and the game can be resumed.

A general warning though: A player like myself will beat you via science or domination quite handily if it takes till t356 for the cultural win.
And i'm not that good.

Culture is a rather imbalanced victory condition that simply cannot be finished as quickly as science/domination in a MP scenario, not to mention how much more risky it is due to the need for more buildings to be built, and wonders.

I really am looking forward to the expansion improving it and hopefully making it more viable for MP.

^ That said, it's possible to win culturally in less than 250 turns on standard speed, which is still more time than the quickest science and diplo victories but not that bad.

The reason playing for culture is typically a disaster in MP is that your military sciences will almost always be heavily lacking compared to an equally skilled science focused player, while all the valuable cities you have makes you a very lucrative target.

When I say science focused player I'm not exclusively referring to people going for tech victory, mind you.

Well you can always take down every cities excepted 1 capital and aim for a cultural victory after everyone being decimated :p

I also hope for a better balance in term of finish dates between all ''peaceful'' victories. I'm currently playing a gmr game where everyone has a specific peaceful victory to achieve(we can't conquer cities but we can pillage and annoy) and i'm the guy who is trying a cultural one. It will probably be my hardest game ever!

Like another poster said, the problem in mp is that you need science and military to resist the long term games against humans.

Just curious, how are people getting fast tech in a MP game where you can't just sell of your luxuries for gold to buy buildings for, and where getting research agreements aren't just a walk in the park.

If you have Tradition start, then build libraries and then National College ASAP.
If you go ICS, then build libraries in cities with population 4+.
You should also tech up to Education rather early and build ASAP universities in cities with population 8+ and then fill in scientific slots.
Science can be further boosted by constructing observatories in large cities near mountains and hooking up some social policies from Rationalism tree.

Large production capacity of your cities, high bpt level and timely upgraded military units are main keys for successful gaming in MP.

But we should see how things will change after BNW is introduced. :p
