What We Must Need In Civ 5

There's not going to be a civ 5 for about another 20 years or so. Why? Because of the civ on facebook.

Big deal. Games in general have about a 5 year shelf life. So the version at Facebook might run for that long, then they'll be looking for a new source of revenue. But I doubt that the Facebook venture is going to be all that lucrative compared to a real release, and it won't even run for the full 5 years before they start looking for more ways to make some money. I give it about 2-3 years, then we'll be hearing about another Civ, with release a couple of years after that.

ARE is Facebook a side project to keep Gamers asking them when Civ5 coming out, giving them more time

The only things that would make a CIV 5 worthwhile to me would be (1) a better AI, and (2) a spherical world map.

These are both pretty hard things to manage. (I could see the second working with triangular plots and a dymaxion projection fairly well...), but until they're doable I'd rather see Alpha Centauri II any day...

The Planetfall mod is actually pretty good.

Well, I'm more interested in a spiritual successor than a loving recreation anyhow. (Although I am checking out Planetfall), preferably something where there are hundreds of different possibilities for for the nature and mysteries of the alien biosphere rather than just a single one. The original factions and name don't matter; I'd be more than happy to buy "Sid Meier's Tau Ceti", no problem...

I definitely agree with that, Jeff.

I'm just curious as to why there are no concrete plans for a Civ 5 yet. Most games that are this successful have plans for a sequel. It's a shame that there aren't other games out there like Civ. I don't care for Galactic Civilizations as I love MP and mainly plan Civ MP and sadly HOMM V does not have real simultaneous turns :(

I read an article awhile back and it sort of indicated that Sid was getting rather tired of Civ. He wanted to move on to something else for awhile. He has been working on the game for a long time now after all.

Depends on the system 360/ps3 last about 2-3 years but P.C games last longer due to modding and Requirements for the next. On topic Civ 5's mlitary system should be based off of Total war's without tactical battles. While the domestic should have the cabinets system and as for the Diplomacy aspect the relationships need inmprovement cause most diplomacy effects only last for 1 to 2 hundred yrs at the most. The Ai is ok but it needs to have gameplan not a 5-20 turn strategy. The production should be related to mostly Population not surrounding terrain exept in the case of certain resources. We have good civs but units could be improved like very general in begining then as civs start to develop unique identies the units diverisify too. If all this was made into a fast running game than I would be able to play it for almost forever.:goodjob::goodjob:to Firaxis for current inmprovemnets. My Opinion.

Can't blame him for wanting to enjoy what he's working on....but I can still be a grouch about it! :P

Are there any other games that you guys play that are similar to Civ and multiplayer? I normally play on a lan with another friend and we find we enjoy TBS games a lot more now days than the RTS type stuff.

I'm mixed on tactical combat. To a great extent, CIV already has taken combat to a certain level of abstraction. Each unit is conceptually a regiment or company or whatever.

"Already"? I think they've represented larger groups since Civ I ("Hey, I just conquered the world... with 20 chariots!"). Except for ships, perhaps. Apart from early ships, I think they represent a small group instead of a single ship.

I'll reply to your nitpick with a nitpick. You are aware that most words in the English language have multiple definitions? (That may not be a rhetorical question, considering you're in Finland.)

That said, I agree with the ship clarification.

Civs for Austria and Canada. Yes, we indeed NEED them, especially on Earth Maps. Austria prevents Germany getting too strong, and Canada does the same to America (Aztecs can be Mexico in those maps). Also, no HRE, waste of a slot, just a medieval Germany.

I'm sorry, I must've misunderstood your intention.

However, I still don't like the idea of tactical combat in Civ. I also don't think we really need Civ V, but rather something new. It could use the same historic premise but be implemented all differently. I think Sid himself is through with making the same wonders and empires happen over and over again.

This is kind of sad, as Civilization is the game that really touched me (Civ II actually) with its epic feel. But perhaps it's best if no more "real" Civilization games are made. Sid must have a lot of good ideas he hasn't had time for because Civ has taken all his effort. Maybe it's time for new epic games to rise. Perhaps more in-depth empire management, perhaps more conquest oriented. Time will tell (whoa I'm getting poetic again).

I could get behind that. Blizzard did a similar re-engineering of Warcraft and Starcraft (stil yet to come this year).

All you need is a few more native american tribes represented instead of lumping them all into one nation. Canada should not be in the game, it just doesn't belong as a unique civilization.

Here's a thought.

What if CiV had all nations, upwards of 2,000 that exist now or existed in the past (to a point).

The main problem with adding more nations is that in CIV they require the coding of a leaderhead, flag, UU, and UB artwork.

What if the only thing required was a flag? Get rid of the leaderhead... or do it in a different way so that art isn't required.

Instead of UU and UB, allow the player to invest resources to develop their own traits and bonuses. Depending on choices made in the game, the civ will get these bonuses.

So, a player could choose to be pretty much anything they wanted. Even, made up civs... allow the player to choose "none of the above, enter Civ name here:_____________"

...just thinking out loud here...
