Because Dire Straits is a "mainstream radio friendly band" which seems to be unpopular on this forum. And I would agree with your statement about Mark Knopfler.

No, pop music is unpopular on this forum.

That's untrue. I listen to pop music all the time. I just listened to Karmacoma, which went to 28 on the UK charts. I listen to even more "pop" songs all the time, from the Beatles and the Beach Boys and some girl group songs, to New Order and Depeche Mode to Madonna. Other posters have similar listening habits as well. Madviking listens to Katy Perry and Adele pretty frequently, for example.

The Sugarcubes - Birthday (a pop song)

Please don't compare the Beatles to crap like Katy Perry, Madonna et al.

They are still both firmly in the pop category though. And yes, even if one is vastly superior over the other (to which I would have to agree)

edit: and isn't "mainstream radio friendly" the classic definition of pop?

modern pop.

radio friendly =\= pop

Goo Goo Dolls is on the radio occasionally, as is RHCP, AC/DC, and a select amount of other quality music. However, it also has Bieber and Minaj and Perry and all that crap.
