What's going to happen with Syria?

Does anyone have an idea of the near future of Syria and its participation in the current war? I've heard all from Iran and Syria will enter together to Syria doesn't have an army and won't be able to do anything to they will act as a third part negotiator to put an end to the conflict.

The reason I'm asking is that I'm in possession of a ticket taking me to Damascus on Tuesday. The intention was to travel around Lebanon, Syria and Jordan for a month. I've figured out the status of Jordan and Lebanon, and the current status of travelling in Syria. What I, and all the sources I find, don't seem to be able to figure out is what's going to happen with Syria, in the light of the Israel-Lebanese war. For the sake of people's lives, I hope there won't be a full blown war in ME, and that some third part in cooperation with the Lebanese government can dissolve Hizbollah and return control to the government. Still, if it's probable Syria gets involved, I probably should rearrange my holiday. My plan is to make a decision on Monday (mostly likely to go if nothing changes), and if I decide to go, make sure we spend the first half in Jordan to get more time to see how the situation evolves. Am I foolish?

So, the question stand, what's going to happen with Syria?

With regard to the holiday question:
Don't be stupid and cancel the trip. I dont know where you live, but I'd stay at least one state away from the new warzone....

I think we can expect some Israeli operation against Syria, if the situation escalates. Syria is one of the main supporters of Hamas and Hezbollah and also Iran may send military supplies for Hezbollah through Syria. I'd avoid Damascus and areas close to Golan Heights, as well as any Hamas-owned buildings or military bases.

Do not cancel your trip to Syria. Syria is a country well known to be safe to travel in, and the people of Syria are quite hospitable to foreigners. Indeed, they are probably very eager to prove to you that they're not dirty terrorists like your government and media has told you they are! You're not Israeli, so the chances of anything happening to you are slim to nil. If anything, you'll be able to say you visited Syria during these times of tension and war!

Go, you'll have great stories.

I sure as hell wouldn't go. But I wear a seatbelt too, so what do I know.

Historically, I believe that Syria has a different theme that the neighbouring nations, it seems to be more ready to keep the peace through it's version of government.

Thanks for the responses.:)

My gut feeling says the same as Pasi, that I will experience Syrian hospitality and friendliness to its fullest with no problems, which is why I'm still thinking of going.

Considering that our foreign ministry still haven't changed their recommendations about Syria, and that I won't get a refund on the ticket ($700), I'd also feel bad if I don't go and everything ends up being fine. Not that it's an economical decision, but a principal one. Still, principals are stupid if they make me end up in an armed conflict and a war zone.

So, how long do you reckon before this attack on Syria is taking place (if the situation escalates)? Will it be a surprise attack, or one that will be known a few days before? Would the period of "not knowing what's happening next" be over in a couple of weeks, so that a decision can be made then about travelling Syria?

My family cancelled a trip to Fiji when they had a coup, which turned out to be a mistake, and I went to Asia after the Tsunami and had the best time ever. Still, none of these times actually meant a war.

If you really want to go, get a handgun and a knife at least.

Why? Could you explain?

Is it really necessary? Your going somewhere that could likely turn into a war zone. Well I dont know for you, but I would at least like to have some kind of basic weaponary.

Because then you'll get stuck in airport security and not be able to go to Syria. :p

FWIW, Syria has close ties to Hizbullah, but to my knowledge Hizbullah does not operate from Syrian territory, so my guess would be that Syria will not be invaded.

My hunch is that Syria would prefer thats its involvement in the current conflict remain 'covert' and behind the scenes. Iran IMO is more likely to become an open participant before Syria. I can definitely see a scenario where Iran is launching its own rockets at Israel, and Israel is responding with bombing raids.

edit:
The intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the information, said about 100 Iranian soldiers are in Lebanon and helped fire the Iranian-made, radar-guided C-102 at the ship late Friday.

The official added that the troops involved in firing the missile are from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, an elite corps of more than 200,000 fighters that is independent of the regular armed forces and controlled directly by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

I can't picture a likely situation where I'm better off with a weapon, I will have nothing to defend (I can part with my belongings) and nobody will benefit from attacking me. Especially since I've never handled weapons before, and would probably be out-manoeuvred. Also it'll make me seem like a threat and make me a fair target.

Well since you never handled a gun before, well then you would be screwed, forget about that, airport security probably wouldnt let you take it with you anyway.

As for benefits to attacking you, I'm sure some terrorist might capture you and threaten to behead you on live internet video. ;)

Syria will most likely will not attack israel, and Israel almost for sure will not attack Syria. Don't go to lebanon, anyhow. It is a mess there.

I'm glad to hear this. Especially considering you live in Israel.

On a slightly different note, I also see you're from Eilat, and would like to ask about the temperature down by the red sea. I didn't plan to go as south as that, but might do that now if I'm staying longer in Jordan. I read it can go up to 44C in the shade, is it still bearable? Is it possible to dive when it's this hot?

You will probably be ok if you stay in syria, you might however wanna check the websites of the US and British state departments, see if there are any warnings.

but why whould you even wanna go to syria? you will bring commerce to Syria, which will make Syria stronger. Syria supports terrorists. If Syria gets stronger terrorists get stronger.

therfore if you go to Syria you are helping to support terrorists blow up busses with little kids on them.
