Whats happening to NES!?!?

I'm pretty sure that useless SPAM is the reason. I've noticed that the amount of SPAM has increased greatly over the past few months. mostly because of small group of people. I won't mention any names, I just hope that people who recognize themselves from this and learn from it.

THAT is the main reason ruining nesses. Not complicity (we've still got loads of basic story nes's around, actually I've already started to get bored to those simple nesses) and not because of bad mods (usually mods of today make their nesses last longer than the ones who were modding back when I was a newbie).

SPAMMERS BRING YOUR SPAM ELSEWHERE!

china444: by starting series of discussion inside the NES thread that sound more like rl discussions. and when these discussion that NOBODY else wants to read except those who are having their little petty argument start lasting several pages, it REALLY hurts the game. See stjnes5 as a good example of a nes that would have been AWESOME without the spam.

SPAM is the NR. 1 problem in some current NES. All of Jasons NES are infected by the virus (stjnes5 wa horrible and stjnes8 will get horibble too.) and some other NES too. While most people just write they little storys and orders other people just spamm like hell. Not only those "understandable" spam posts like OMG you didnt do my orders or WTH why didn´t I win that battle there are also some things that realy make me angry. Flame wars with people getting banned for several days (...) and 10001 posts about things ONLY YOU and the other person wants to know about. This sucks hard. I hope this will become better...

I'll tell you what the problem is. It's that everybody wants to WIN or be the most powerful. Sure this is what everybody has wanted since the NES has begun, but not to this extent. I seriously get people, who know who they are, that argue every update why I didnt follow their orders strictly, or why they lost a battle. Especially in stJNES5 I had to explain every move to every person.

What I'm saying is, there needs to be a line. Players should play for fun, not to win. Awards should be given to those who make the storyline the most interesting, even though they are not the most powerful nation in the world.

Right around rtor2 era did this player vs. mod thing happen. And I will admit I was one of the players who argued every outcome. But once I moded my first NES in this new era, I realized how absolutely absurd it was. That is why I am telling you now, so you don't have to have the experience to know it.

Btw, it is not rivalry between the mods, lol. At least I don't think so, not of the people I know. I look to mods for inspiration and ideas, not to beat or get the most post count or most people. And china, I agree, EQ was the best mod for rtor2. I also believe aaminion is pretty close too for his NES.

And it is not complexity, or having too many things to worry about. stJNES8 is not complex, but there are many ways you can go to familiarize your nation with yourself, and set the course of the nation. This creates a player's identity with the NES, and that's is what will hopefully keep stJNES8 going. Complexity is not the problem, to make an NES fun, you have to get the players to familiarize with their nation. That's how rtor2 was so fun, and thats how many long nes's like stjnes5 and 4 lasted.

My 2 cents.

Jason

Good speech Jason, I certainly do agree with you. For me, the main NESing reason is making and seeing history happen, not a victory for one country or another. As a matter of fact, I am not so sure there is any such thing as victory in NESes.

Now go update StJNES 7 already, you promsied to do that yesterday! ;)

Yeah, Jason is right on point there. The goal of an NES shouldn't be to win, or to dominate the world... it should be to have fun, and make your nation the most interesting and dynamic it can be. The goal should be long, complex stories and a fun, friendly environmen... not a map where you're color is the one present. I'm not saying we shouldn't play to the best of our ability; we should all try to do as well, and make our nation as power, as we can.... but not to the point of *****ing about every mod decision to try and save yourself a few casualties or gain a little more land.

I for one am not here to win. I have never won, I never intend to win. In stJNES8, my goal is not to dominate the world or even Africa with the Songhai. It's to build a mid-sized economic and cultural powerhouse that will be FUN TO WRITE STORIES ABOUT.

What Jason said about familiarizing with your nation is absolutely what we need right now. It seems like the "good" players all have a formula already figured out of how they're gonna win each game. They build a big, strong nation through the same wars and diplomacy, ally and conquer nations.... no matter what country they play as, they do it the same. I personally think it would be better if people played with a different style for every civ they play.... make some warmongers, and some peacemongers, and (God forbid!) even make some of them weak. A more dynamic NES world is a more interesting one, for all involved.

End rant.

Nope!

they're getting stale cause its all story games. the "ultimate" story game is a ruleless one, but that doesnt work, so the games go in cicles from more rules to less and back and forth.

and you guys arent picking up on the fact that just because a game did well, was fun for all and so on, that does NOT mean that a clone will do well at all. the same old thing gets stale, the circumstances are different (with different players, different random events, different RL events that take players away).

so its high time for the NESs to go back to their board versions. in these games there is no "ultimate board game", its the variations in the rules that are interesting.

in story games any rule is a restriction, which takes it further from the ideal. in board games, there is a limit on how many rules you can have (before the game is cumbersome), but there is more then enough space for a few of them and the combinations of military, economy, research, randomness, and allience rules is almost limitless (and that's not counting making things up).

so start making some board games, and the community will liven up.

Emu, by "weak" I don't mean that "making yourself an inviting target for an ass-kicking." I mean being relatively small nation, not a huge empire. Look at Naervod's recent NES. While some of us (myself included) took big powers like USA, Russia, and China, Global Nexus took Tunisia... tiny, mostly-insignificant little Tunisia. If people would once in a while (not all the time, cuz then it would get boring) just play as a humble country and look out for their interests rather than trying to dominate the world, I think we'd all have more fun. Of course, that's just the perspective of someone who is in this for the stories more'n anything. ;)

I have taken a new turn of nes by taking weak nations (some failed, yes, and some are doing good.) like Denmark and Holland in stJNES5 and Zululand in AmenNES, its for the challenge.

Though also, for me, I am beggining to realize in nes, atleast some people's nes, strategy and writing tactics doesn't work for anything, which is why I am going to stop this, sinse thats all I used to do.

Aswell as stories, I dont like it when rules are based on how many stories you write and punish you on how many you dont. Its good to get rewarded for writing stories, but dont favoritize on those who write alot or kill a nation becuase thier ruler is not writing stories.

I for one dont have any time to write stories at this point, I try every some times, but thats all I do.

And not to mention, everyone who posted here LIED if they said they dont care about winning becuase I know for sure as hell that none of you like losing. ;)

Anyways, I think NES has taken a new turn, and when I have posted this topic, there was only around 3 nes' out, now there are new and fresh players, new nes' and summer is on its way, so I think this topic is kinda obsolete for the fact that I used to think NES was dying and I guess its not. :)

Dont die now :(

I just start enjoying nes in the last couple weeks. Truely, I was suprised by the knowledge of NES player about histroy of the world. I like history (although about Indonesia, and modern history starting from WWII). NES players here have knowledge beyond what I'm thinking about games and players. The only regret I have so far is not knowing about NES earlier :(.

About spamming, why dont we make 1 thread for NES, and 1 thread for spoiling of it for each nes (incluing asking about status order). If we can come up with standard name for the main NES thread, we should be able to come up with standard name for the spoiling nes ? Just an idea.

About writing a story. I like writing for some extent. But lacking of history before 1900, lacking of English words may give problem to me :(. I agree about rewarding the story, but I disagree about punishment of not doing it.

Long Live NES

read the dates, this was quite a long time ago these guys were talking about it...

perhaps people are betting bored ::gasp::

perhaps some one needs to satrt the next rtor2, stjnes4/5.

I think the fun is slowly dying as we turn into complex types of nesing. we need more simplicity. That way you don't have to keep track of 20 things at once and you can have fun ^_^

ahaha I know you in real life!

sorry disregard this post
