I just finished a game with England (Marathon speed, king, small continents maps) and got a 13 level Destroyer with 1080/910 experience points. That is a destroyer with all the avaliable promotions and two free "heal instantly"!
Of course, this Destroyer was promoted from Trireme to Ship of the line, and later to Destroyer. Constant war and +3 movement points also did the trick (I managed to get the lighthouse). The +1 range promotion is awesome to attack cities for years without being damaged, and thus obtaining an obscene number of experience points. Also the Logistics promotion is great.
I won the game without building many units, mainly the trireme and later an additional Ship of the line. With both units I achieved a Conquest victory, decimating enemy land units and cities for years. Of course, two rifleman obtened from ancient ruins through upgrade (before having the appropiate tech) helped a lot...
Only one comment: the Ships of the line unit seems to be better in their age than Destroyers in theirs. It seems Destroyers are a bit underpowered. They should be able to kill a Frigate in almost two shots (not four). The gap between wooden ships and metal ones should be larger.
I haven't attached a screenshot because all (ingame and with utilities) I made are blank! I think it may be because I have a X1950pro AGP graphics card. In both WinXP and Windows 7, several icons are not displayed properly and, from time to time, the terrain textures redraw from bottom to top, causing a noticeable lag.
