Out of curiousity, are they on because people watch them and sponsers pay for them, or does some governing body determine that that is what you should have available?

Uh, the fact is that the worst teenagers are the best aims for sponsors,
because they got the best combination of money (got from parents)
and stupidity. So sponsors just LOOVE shows for teenagers.
And teenagers like shows which are very, very pure crap.

Letterman has a hell of a lot to answer for - copies of that show can be found in every country on earth. The worst is probably the German Letterman, although the UK Letterman featuring Jonathan Ross was pretty bad.

i just want to reply to something said at the begining of this thread - about high-brow or quality british tv - what the hell is benny hill? i love it, but is lower-brow than american talk shows - all benny hill is is a hundred different skits about a zany way for some girl losing her cloths and benny hill getting slapped - thats it - ever skit is the same - you have to love it's simplicity, but there is dumb tv from all countries - besides, if our shows are so bad, and dumb, why are they exported to the whole world?

How else are we going to get a cultural victory? (Oh yeah, McDonalds, Michael Jackson, and (if you've seen Kobyashi's wedding picture) Star Trek).

Why should Letterman have a lot to answer for? What about personal responsibility? If other countries want to emulate David Letterman that is their own lookout. It's not David's fault these nations can't stand up to our insideous forms of mind control.

Before the Europeans on the board do a collective back-pat about how great their tv shows are, remember that two absolutely awful but much-watched shows in the US are European imports. I'm talking of Survivor and Big Brother, of course.

That said, America still has no excuse for "Jerry Springer," "Judge Judy" and "Who Wants to Marry A Millionaire."

Lol.....you've got to be kidding me, MS. Falwell is a biggoted idiot that DID NOT retract his statement. Rather he claimed it was taken out of context and offered no further explanation. He believes what he said. And so do more people than will actually admit it.

And Bill Maher is not a communist. This is laughable. Of course, I actually watch the show rather than doing as conservatives tend to do, and blast it without seeing it. If you HAD ever cared to watch the show you'd know that Maher is, in fact, rather hawkish, and very much a capitalist.

He doesn't toe the Republican party line, however, which equates him with communists, I know.

And the ACLU has defended everyone from the KKK to NAMBLA. They would also defend Mr. Falwell's right to spew his racist, biggoted venom. Thats what they do. They don't play favorites. They defend the constitution as the first and last line of defense. I'm grateful to them.
