The name narcissm comes from a greek myth, where Narcist so loved his reflection so loved his reflection that he jumped into a pool and drowned. Oh yeah and a fair maiden killed herself for the love of Narcist, but of course he doesn't care since he's an ass who cares only for his appearance. Since my first association with the word is from the story, I took the word to meant self absorption to the exclusion of others, kind of like the celebrities we have nowadays.
