Whats your city name originate from? I have two....

Where i go to school, Ledyard- On top of a plaque is an image of Col. Ledyard surrendering. Underneath the picture are the words, "British officer - 'Who commands this Fort?' Ledyard - 'I did sir, but you do now'". There are TWO supposed theories about what happened next. One is that Ledyard gave the British Officer his sword and the officer promptly gored Col. Ledyard, killing him. The second theory is that right after Ledyard gave him the sword the officer was struck from behind and fell into Ledyard killing him that way. Either way, the town was named after him anyways.

By the way, the General that lead the attack against Fort Trumbull (where this all occured) was Benedict Arnold. He grew up only a short distance away from here too.

- I believe the name comes from a man who had a ferry. You see, the Thames River cuts off my side of the river to the other. So before they built a bridge, the man, Gale(?) used his ferry to bring people to the other side. Exciting huh? :)

- Cambridge (where I live) was originally called Grantabrycge as it was the place of the bridge over the river Granta. By Elizabethan times Grantabrycge had mutated into Cambridge, and so the Granta became the Cam.

- Norwich (where I go to university) is derived from Norij, changing to Norowic in Anglo-Saxon times to Noruic as mentioned in the Doomsday Book and means 'North town'.

Indianapolis,
It was founded as the state capital of indiana in 1824. The name comes from the State Name & polis (I believe polis is greek for city).

Seattle:

Named after Chief Seattle, of the local Duwamish tribe. Around 1850 he negotiated a deal with Seattle's founders granting them the rights to the land it was built on.

Monterrey.
( Ciudad Metropolitana de Monterrey )

It was the name one of the spain's Viceroy during the fundation of the city in 1596.
It was the capitol of Mexico during the war against the french but after we defeat them we became province again.

what a waste :o

York. A city in Britain. :)
Formerly, a city in the Netherlands. ;)

New York, named after the Duke of York, who had something to do with conquering it, if I'm not mistaken. Originally named New Amsterdam, because it was owned by the Dutch. :)

I'm not sure about the origin of the name Brooklyn, I'll have to look it up.

@ cromagnon: I think we New Yorkers should answer for our boroughs, as the city is pretty large...;)

Aha! The origin of the name Brooklyn:

The name Brooklyn is of Dutch origin, it was named Breuckelen by the settlers in 1636, after a town south of Amsterdam/Netherlands.
In 1646, the Village of Breuckelen was authorized by the Dutch West India Company and became the first municipality in what is now New York State.

Seems those Dutch had a thing for naming towns after already existing ones...;)

The origin of the name Bremen is not exactly known, there are various theories. But as the name is older than the scripted records that will probably never be determined.

New York was named after the Duke of York not the city of York.
We learn something new every day. Cheers MrP! :)

I have lived or studied in countless cities but I presume you want to know about the region where I was born. This place pre-dates recorded history so I can't say where the name comes from :)

Singapore, English form of Singapura, the Malay name. Means Lion City; singa is Malay for lion and pura is Hindu for city or citadel, somewhat like polis in Greek. Before Islam, this whole region is Hindu or Buddhist.

My hometown - Johor Bahru - is simply New Johor; Johor being the state. Not a very old city. There's also a Johor Lama (Old Johor), long abandoned, which served as the capital for the Johorean sultans.

As a matter of local interest, the earlier Johor sultans originally came fr the Malacca ruling lineage, which was conquered by the Portuguese in 1511, who captured it for its strategic location as the entreport city of the East Indies. They continued to skirmish with the Europeans (the Dutch were in after 1641) in Malacca for the next few centuries, as well as with the Acehnese, a powerful Islamic state atop Sumatera island.

Does one of the theories involve aliens in any way?
Quiet. I plan to write a book about that when the time has come. Which shouldn't be too far in the future, given the success of Erich von Däniken.

The former name of Paris was, I guess everyone knows it here, Lutecia.
The territory of Lutecia belonged to the Parisii, sub-tribe ( word ?) of the Senons, a Celtic tribe.
Lutecia becamed Paris in the 3rd or 4th century AC, and obviously took the name of its Pre- Roman inhabitants.
Parisii comes from Kwarisii because of the Montmartre quarries.

Castlegar: Stolen from an Irish city with the same name

It means,
Castle = Castle
Gar = small
____________

Small Castle!

Thus ends today's lesson in Gaelic
