When standing on the shoulders of giants, don't jump

IMO, change just for the sake of ghange is not necessarily all wrong in gaming world nor is it always wrong in real life. Its refreshing.

I'm sure that changing my gastritis pills with cianure pills will be refreshing, according to your statement it's a good change, so i'll give it a try...

He said nothing of the sort. He said that change is not always bad, which is not the same as change is always good.

"Change just for the sake of change is not wrong" is very different from "change is not always bad". But maybe you read it wrong in the first time, so i can understand your misunderstanding...:D

If you have something that works, and you junk it, you have to do a lot of work to ensure that the replacement concept also works. That's the danger in heaving everything overboard: you can introduce ideas which look better in theory than they do in practice, or you introduce severe imbalances, or add things which look OK in initial testing but simply don't hold up many hours of use later.

He didn't say "Change just for the sake of change is not wrong", he said "is not necessarily all wrong". That gives it a whole other meaning.

I replaced wrong with bad, which doesn't really change the meaning. But you keep forgetting the "not necessarily" or "not always" part, which is crucial.

SMAC was sci-fi, not civ. :(

Civ and SMAC are essentially the same games - one just based in historical fantasy and one based in sci fi. You could literally rename mind worms keshiks, planet busters nukes, tree farms lumber mills, fungus jungles, etc etc, and change the names of a bunch of things in SMAC and it would be indistinguishable from a Civ game. When I say it's one of the the best Civ games, I'm talking from technical merits, not gameplay flavour and all that. Though, they nailed the flavour of the game dead on too - sort of creepy, otherworldly, new agey...

The rule for a good sequel, as a book, TV show, or game, are "more of the same, but different". The previous Civs have all been "more of the same" -- build an empire to stand the test of time -- but with important, and generally constant, improvements.

Civ V is not "more of the same". It is too different. That is okay -- here, I agree with you -- but then they shouldn't have called it "Civ V", but "Civ War". Then, everybody would have known what they are getting into, people could decide if they wanted a Civ version that is basically only war, war, and more war, and the rest of us could stick with Civ IV BtS -- still the last "full real" Civ. Civ V claims it is a sequel, but it isn't (which is why so many people are upset). It is outside the main franchise.

SAYS IT ALL FOR ME, EofC
COOL AVATAR TOO!

Civilization is a game series and the purpose of a game series (talking about game series that goes beyond 3) developers is not to polish the same god dam game mechanics over and over again and just simply add new stuff to that same old game. That’s perhaps what the other software tends to do but they are not games

Have you ever heard of Madden football? It's one of the most popular and successful franchises in (sports) gaming and it basically is the same game every year with minor tweaks.

Ever play Dynasty Warriors? Resident Evil?

Got any other opinions?

I might have heard of Madden football (altough we don’t really care about American football here in Europe and I really doubt that it sells well here in Europe), I have definetly heard of Resident Evil but I have never heard of Dynasty Warriors. So tell me, whats there to know about these games? You told that Madden football is basicly the same game every year with minor tweaks, but I wouldn’t know. I guess I just have to take your word for it.. Altough I just wish you could be more detailed when telling about these games.

Wouldn't it really be the best solution for most of the games problems to lets say quadruple the scale/size of maps?

lol dont worry guys everyone made the exact same arguments about why civ4 was diarrhea when it first came out and theres still people on this website who believe them :crazyeye:

What they should have done instead of limiting production across the board is just put a hard cap on army units that you can have out at once, and make it so that the limit goes up as the game goes on (ala sins of a solar empire).

Madden football releases a new game every year. The last 5 or 7 have had no major gameplay changes at all, just interface tweaks, roster updates, etc.

Dynasty Warriors has at least 5 games that play exactly the same, but with improved performance, more characters/weapons/maps.

Resident Evil (haven't played the last 2) has at least 5 games that are pretty much the same as well, but each has a new storyline and improved graphics.

My point is that continuing franchises like this have a lot of success when they remain true to their predecessors. There are many more than the 3 I listed. I cannot think of a successful franchise that varied wildly from its predecessors off the top of my head.

and you would know because you joined in... December 2010... right?

You talk nonsense. I was here the whole way. There was never such a polarization of this community before, and that only says a lot about the latest release.

You neglected to also mention that post was his/her first.

edit: I joined recently too, and although I have played Civ games since around 2k1/2k2 I don't know anything about what happened in this community before my join date. I can only speak of my personal experiences.

civ4 was far from a giant... imo civ5 has better design than civ4...

lots of things are terrible, but the end result is that the game is more about strategy and less about optimization

in civ4 you would survive a very very long time with the wrong strategies because the attacker needed 2x or 3x as many units. in civ5 you actually need to play strategically to do something non-militaristic.

talking about multiplayer here. forget the fact that the AI is atrocious in both games

where did "this guy" come out???:crazyeye::rotfl:

Just replace Madden with Pro Evolution Soccer, or FIFA. It's exactly the same bussiness model.
