Where is the Manual?

Just to give Gelvan a bit of support here: I came across this thread by trying to find out if a printed manual came inside the box. I too am one of those people who hates reading something on screen and would much prefer to have a manual open on my desk as I'm playing to reference, rather than have to leave the game just so that I "scroll" through a pdf on my monitor.

BTW, it should be noted that paper consumption has BALLOONED worldwide since the internet and email came to be. Back in the nineties, all the experts where predicting a "paperless office". The very opposite came true. Working in an office, I can't tell you how many people mindlessly print copies upon copies of the same pdf or PowerPoint document, just because they can't be bothered to file and re-reference it a few days/weeks later or simply bother to select the one or two pages to print rather than the entire 100+ page pdf.

Also, you should note that printed manuals are about half the size of a standard letter-sized page (which your pdf/ppt document will scale up to when it's printed), and that manuals are printed on BOTH-SIDES of the smaller page size on usually much lighter paper stock (ie, less pulp used) than your standard laserwriter paper.

I'm a graphic designer by trade, and an environmentalist at heart. And I can tell you that the company's decision to nix the paper manual in their boxes has less to do with "saving trees" than it is to saving the bottom line. If they were so committed to lowering costs for the games for consumers, the game prices would come down would they not? And when I last checked, the digital download was the same price as the boxed. Now, they want you to sell out another $20-30 for a quazi manual/"strategy guide".

Any word on when the interactive manual will be patched? There are many errors in there at the moment.

Imo no games should have hard copy manuals. No need for it. In a digital age when the written word is migrating to soft-copy everywhere it occurs, it makes sense to have manuals in digital form.

Having a soft-copy means that the game's devs can update the manual to reflect changes and you can download the latest version. This makes the whole thing far more flexible and useful.

Most people have a smartphone, tablet, netbook or laptop, so there's no need to be tethered to the desktop to read the manual either. Saves trees, saves CO2, makes the manual impossible to loose and always current.

If you insist on having a hardcopy, just print the digital version.

Only they don't. I never saw a PDF manual being patched yet, to be honest. I haven't played a huge number of different games in the last two or three years, but it must have been 20 or so at least.

I'm with Gelvan 100% on this one

All the people that "love the digital age", and don't need a manual, then 2K should sell you a game without a manual - and $5 or $10 bucks cheaper!

For people that like a manual, then give them an option to have a manual ! But don't insult our intelligence about "saving trees" when you then offer a 200+ art book.

Let's face the facts ..... 2K cut all the corners they could to save money. They can spin all the reasons they want "we wanted to give you an interactive manual" (yea, in a paper manual its called an index and table of contents), but that is what they did.

And as someone else mentioned, the manual is such crap anyways (incomplete, errors galore...) due to them rushing the game out the door.... so in truth Gelvan, you really aren't missing anything, you just saved yourself the time from throwing it across the room in frustration

Saving trees? I bought 5 acres of scrubby bushland and encouraged tree growth. After 10 years it's now 'woodlands'. If, as a low wage earner, I can manage that, then most profitable business' can easily do far more. Surely they could invest in re-forestation etc., so that double the amount (or more) of trees that are used in book production could be planted. It's all about wanting to make that effort to do something.

As a reward for doing something for the environment my land valuation has of course risen and therefore my land taxes have skyrocketed. If governments were serious about the environment they would be reducing land taxes for people who encourage tree growth rather then increasing them.

I was mad too. I bought this product, and all I got a was disc. What am I going to do with a disc? I don't have a computer! I was looking forward to that manual, and now I want my money back.

Manuals are (should be) a thing of the past for most games. And I'm the guy who used to LOVE a good, weighty manual.

What's really missing from this game are decent tooltips. The tooltips / mouseover information is totally lacking. The amount of information I DON'T get through the main game interface is just atrocious.
