I'm going to a book festival on Friday any recommendations? Something historical or political please.

Last Night a DJ Saved My Life. It's an excellent historical view of the origins of modern music culture. Well written, entertaining, has a character focus, and highly educational. I especially recommend it you, Nedim, my good man.

Mediterranean Anarchy, Interstate War and the Rise of Rome - Well worth a read. I also remember why I hate International Relations. Not discipline should encourage... as a matter of course stilted writing. This was well written for IR and it was still... kind of painful.
Warefare and Society in the Barbarian West: I  Guy Halsall.
Decline and Fall of the Sasanian Empire: Parvaneh Pourshariati is an awesome name - just sayin'.
China Between Empires - Well worth a read.
The Other Europe in the Middle Ages - Damn Dachs for ruining much of archaeological thought for me (he had an Avar sword and is therefore an Avar is not an argument). Numismatics stuff was cool though.

Is that the old one, or is that the new one? There's like two, with opposing names that I think contradict each others' claims  (help me out here).

It's a new book. And quite interesting. This is development economics. And as such there's a lot of disagreement in the field. The opening chapters of the book lay out where the authors think some other development conventional wisdom misses the mark.

Are we starting a new thread?

Finished A Modern History of Iran by Ervand Abrahamian. Interesting read, focuses on the formation of the state of Iran and its associated bureaucracy and the constant tug-of-war between secular reform and conservatism, first via the aristocracy and then by the Islamic clergy. Detailed and informative but becomes less so as the present gets closer. The Iran-Iraq War is just a few paragraphs. The nuclear program is only a few sentences every few paragraphs. The book is also severely lacking on Iran's foreign policy initiatives. You'd never guess Iran has an animosity towards Israel or that it funds groups such as Hezbollah. Still, most definitely worth a read.

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

Just now reading the Intro. Not sure if I really want to get too deeply into it.

I've heard good things.

I'm just starting on the last entry in the Malazan Book of the Fallen, The Crippled God. It's been years since I read the others and now I'm struggling to remember just what the hell happened before! So many characters...
