Speaking of more Russian leaders, how about a Vladimir Putin leader. :) Has the ability to influence elections of other civs. I'm being silly here of course, especially since other civilizations don't have elections, we are leaders for 6000 years. On a serious note, he's proving to be one of Russia's strongest leaders, at least modern ones. To have that much influence on the world's largest superpower is impressive indeed. Of course we could always bring back a Stalin leader. It was a bit controversial even in Civ4's day, so not too likely that will happen. Most likely it would be Cathy again. Lenin might be interesting.

I think Putin ticks the boxes for a leader in civilization quite well, but I don't expect Firaxis to add a leader that is still in everyone's memory or even still reigning, which is an understandable decision. Maybe in some 60 years Putin will be in the game... Where are we then, Civ XVIII I believe, if it remains 5 years per civ.

I picked Spain because I only play Spain. It's because they're not an average civ and I like a challenge. Their bonus against other religions is nice because the computer always likes to found religions. Religious victories are possible only through conquest because spreading peacefully negates your bonus; you want as many different civs as possible following a different religion. If no religions are founded you have to "force" the religion question; either adopt Crusade or DotF depending on your warring momentum. The mission is a puzzle and it's nice with adjacency bonuses on natrual wonders and Petra. If other continents are too far I will build campuses early for that adjacency bonus with the mission. I will also have to make trade routes with city-states and civs over there if I cannot settle a different continent myself. As for the conquistador if you use Crusade or DotF as a belief and a great general or two you basically have tanks.

Tried a game with Persia yesterday, and I have to say that the bonus movement is amazingly fun. Seriously, it is incredible and extremely fun.

Depending on the mood, and in no particular order:
  • Scythia for an early rush on local city states and smaller civs. That's sufficient for domination on a smaller map, but on a larger one you have the cities to sustain a high tech rate and can transition to a more peaceful game.
  • China for a quick wonder lead and a lasting rapid tech and civic development. Perfect for science and culture victories. I don't have much use for the crouching tiger unit (quickly left behind) or the great wall improvement.
  • Germany (occasionally) just to become a production monster, which is sometimes fun in itself, although the U-boat is late and insignificant.
In all cases, I eschew religion. God King will get me a pantheon and that's all I need, after which I switch it out. I don't find spamming and organizing religious units any fun and I'd rather let the AI waste its effort on it. In the rare case a threatened religious victory is threatened, as Scythia I'll simply take out that civ, and as China I've already won in other ways.
