I wouldn't recommend the Sassanids. They're not a bad Civ to play, or historically unjustified, but the Scenario is about Germanic Tribes, or better, the Warlord unit. You'll have the most fun with one of the central tribes, simply because you can reach everything (though you won't be able to get rid of both Romes by yourself).

Timing: Rome wins @ ~turn 130 IIRC without fighting. You should prebuild the Scourge of God. Once that one is completed, and you have about 10 Warlords (stockpile Raiders, upgrade to Warlord costs 150 gp, but there is nothing else to do with your income anyway), strike. Sign everyone possible, and don't stop before both Romes are gone.
This game phase will be ~ turn 80 - 110.
Usually, you'll then ave to kill one or two neighbors to finally win.

That said, I really like FoR. It's extremely interesting to get the proper timing; a slow build-up and landgrab, then you explode, and suddenly most of the map is empty :D

Persia never has to fight Rome. You can win a domination victory by taking over Egypt and Greece and expanding cities into your east and north, plus grabbing a few Scythian. Rome with its slow moving legionaires is an easy enemy to defend when you've set up your cavalry/catapult army (forget about getting much done with Immortals). Just make sure your western Greek cities are well garrisoned.

I'm a relative latecomer to C3C, and I've only joined this site today, so please forgive what may be a long posting.

I've played 3 conquests all the way through so far - RofR, FofR, and WWII-Pac. Just started playing Sengoku yesterday. FofR was a challenge, as I kept trying to win as the Huns my first few times through, but realized that they have a geographic handicap, so on my fourth attempt, looked at the map, and decided to try playing as the Visigoths. They have one unique advantage in the scenario - they border both the Byzantine and Western Roman empires at the beginning of the game, making it possible to make some early gains against each empire (including taking victory locations and slowing down the roman VP rollup.) With the exception of having won by wiping out both empires, this is historically fairly close to what actually caused the fall of the Western Roman Empire, since the Visigoths had been allied with the Romans against the Huns, but once the Huns were turned back, the Romans didn't play nice with the Visigoths, provoking them into sacking Rome. (see

http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/romans/history/fall.htm

for a quick overview.) Some of the gameplay in that scenario is irritating (like the tendency, as in regular civ3, of many civs to gang up on you at times) but I found that giving the barbarian nations a whack on the nose (capture or destroy one or two of their cities, and suddenly they're HAPPY to agree to a peace treaty) allowed me to concentrate on kicking Roman butt.

The WWII-Pac. scenario is just too easy as either the Americans or the Japanese. I'm tempted to try it as the Chinese, but haven't taken the time yet. I've tried the napoleonic era and the age of discovery, but got bored with both pretty quickly. RofR is a good challenge as the Romans, because Carthage as AI can put up a pretty good fight. The keys to success in the older scenarios all seem to hinge on two things - building an army (or armies), and developing heavy cavalry - otherwise, covering long distances with units of movement rate 1 just takes too long, even with roads.

Sengoku is fun, so far. (of course, when you have a commanding lead over your enemies on your first go thru, it's easy to feel that it's fun.) The variety of units is very nice. and pursuing a Microsoft strategy (expand aggressively, and show no quarter) has so far placed my clan well in the lead for a domination victory (less than a quarter of the way thru, and already have a population plurality, just don't have much territory yet) with tech well in advance of all the other clans.

@dsranger1- Welcome to the forums :D . Others have said that the WWII
scenario is too easy also and recommend using the Chinese  .
I still enjoy the scenario and with several bad outcomes things CAN become
difficult for the Japanese b/c there are so many options and a wrong
decision can hurt several different battle areas  . I am a WWII buff
so I like this one anyway  . You might also enjoy the Middle Age one,
try a Viking civ :viking: , and you will  the Beserkers- they :spank:
the butt. Welcome again and I enjoyed ready your summary- send more :goodjob: .

I have one question guys, if I install conquest pack, can I still play PTW or not. Thanks in Advance.

dsranger1, I agree completely about units taking too long to move in Napoli. I wish it had the four move per road like in ROR. Sengoku is awesome, but I also had a commanding lead for most of the game (domination victory with all techs discovered before any enemy fielded samurai warriors, built all wonders (got lucky with GSL)), which leads me to suspect that Takeda clan starts out in too sweet a spot because it was only my second Regent game.

Maharaja, yes, installing Conq installs PTW at the same time and you should be abel to play both off the Conq disk.

@ dsranger1 : if you like WWII Pacific but find it too easy, I advise you to take a look at the PBEM forum (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=90) where you can find Play by E-mail games about this scenario. Against human opponents this scenario becomes really interesting and since it is packed with action and quite short, it is not too heavy a burden for new PBEM players.

I first played FoR as the Celts. After a long time, I attacked the Eastern Romans and I quickly captured England and some parts of France. In the process, I destroyed the Romans and captured 8 cities and 3 VP locations. By this later point in the game I suddenly realized that the Byzantines would have a VP victory in a few turns. The Sassanids had been wiped out by the huns, so I was in second place. I sent my warlords eastward as fast as there littles legs could bare them but it was too late. Before they could reach the first city, I had lost. The moral of this story is that some Conquests are way too. Achieve your objectives as soon as possible.

Age of Discovery is a lot easier if you play as Spain and take Lisbon and that sweet Wonder on the second turn. The Portuguese respond by sacking your island but it's a small price to pay.

This thread is still alive?!!
I finished playing Rise of Rome last week. Fine, I admit. I was wrong. Rise of Rome is the best! :goodjob:
Or atleast with Rome. ;)

I don't have a favorite. In fact I have only played three conquests since I bought the disk. I prefer the epic game. :goodjob:

Edit: I didn't vote cause there was no option for me.

I,m very surprised on how long my thread is still alive...this is is my master piece!(lol)
Anyway thanks to all the people who breathe life into this thread, and to all who ansewred the poll.

One thing i had to try as soon as i got the expansion was the conquest. Of the all the conquests, which is your favorite, and why? What civ you take?

Personally, the WW2 campaign is my favorite, i always take japan(:sniper: i'm just drawn to em). The strategy in the map is awsome, the music really helps the amibience, and i think the first turn idea is brilliant.

My least favorite is middle ages...i just really hate the idea, the units, and the civs(arabs in spain...what the) and the obligation to conquer jerusalem to deliver the treasure.

How about you?

I also like the WW2 campaign. I agree the opening move is brutal on any civ but japan. However, i love playing those other civs because it offers a serious challenge. I especially love playing as america not because i'm an american but because the AI suck as america so i'll let them worry about the ground campaign in china while i work up my air force to bomb japan to hell!!!
