Just transferred to Civ5 G&K after 5+ years of fanatical Civ4BTS fandom. My favorite scenario/map was the Earth 18 civs. Went to find a good earth map for G&K and was overwhelmed. Looking for advice on which earth map people think is the best.
I usually play as Rome and like to play at Marathon speed. Any helpful advice would be appreciated. Thx.

Civ 4 was good because the civs started in the real positions, i have yet to find a senario that does this for civ 5... i was disappointed

Someone has been doing a LP in the Stories and Let's plays forum that has a Earth map where I think all Civs start in their right places.I don't know what the mod is called, but I guess you could ask him.The thread is called, "Earth:All The Russia's", or something like that, and, like I said, it's in the Story's and Let's Plays forum.

Since posting here I've tried a few.
So far I like YNAEM best as a map but you can't play on Marathon.
The others I've tried don't have any Salt for Rome. Which may be picky of me, but Rome got it's economic beginnings due to salt mines and trading salt with the other Italian city states.

On above post replace YNAEM with the Legendary Earth Map.
YNAEM has no resources next to Rome starting location. PTW has inaccurate resources (Citrus?)in Europe. Legendary Earth Map seems okay just can't play at any game speed other than normal.

There's a work around for this. For some reason (author does not know why), it keeps setting itself to the scenario's default speed (normal) no matter what you set.

The way around this is to open up the scenario in the map builder and change the default speed to marathon or whatever you'd like it to be.

In the immediate city radius of Rome there is no resources (except for Iron, which doesn't get revealed until later). Excuse me it seems that the "bonus resources" just pop up randomly in this map. So I can end up with deer in the Rome radius or nothing at all

How do I open up in the map builder? Where is the map builder?

Yes, seen your posts on steam workshop too :D

With bad luck, you can end with the luxuries resources for Rome in the 3-6 rings from start position, but normally you'll get at least the wine, iron and horse near the city, with marble placed a few tiles away.

The mod is 'Vens Gods and Kings Standard Earth Map Pack' and is available through Steam and CivFanatics either through the download centre or the discussion thread.

Unfortunately, my free time has evaporated so Earth: All the Russias is on hold for the foreseeable future.

So you made it?Maybe I would have noticed that by looking a your sig line.

I have been looking long and hard for a True start, True resource map for a very long time. I believe I have finaly found it with "play the world extended" maps located in the mod section on the steam network. The author of this map did a awesome job on it and it is huge! By far the largest Civilization map I have ever played on.

There are a few downsides to this map however.
It takes a ton of computing power to run it.
I would like to see every city state and civilization possible on this map at one time (my computer could handle it)

But if you are looking for a historicle fun and acurate map go no further

there is even a ton of room for England and rome who never have room!

there are minor Size errors on the Hawain Islands and the British Isles but I am not complaning. It makes those civilizations able to compete with monsters like russia and china.

I believe it requires 4 gb of ram to run (minimum) but it is by far the best and way better then Legendary start mod.

I was a huge fan of TSL and as soon as I figure how to remove the 22 civilization on a map at one time cap I am going to add all civs avalible to me and play one long epic world game. :D

I have added a few more city states on my own personal map in there true starting locations but I left a few of the european city states out to save room for the empires if you want a copy of what I have I would be glad to email you a copy of the map as I have it. I do plan on fixing hawii and resizing it but I am going to leave the british siles alone I like having the English as a viable threat for once as opposed to the old TSL map for me the trade off is worth it

The great thing about Yet Another Earth Map is that it doesn't make you choose from a list of pre-selected civs. Instead, it allows you to play any combination of civs on the map, all with accurate start positions. If I want to play with Ancient civs only, I can do that; if I want to play with Industrial civs only, I can do that. I have yet to find another map that allows this. The only drawback is that they are still in the process of updating for Gods and Kings (not yet all map sizes or all new resource and city state placement).

Yeah I downloaded and earth map yesterday only to start as songhai (picked them b/c I didn't want to be crowded early game) in the Yucatan. So I take it there aren't any earth maps with real starting positions that aren't stuck on normal game speed (I prefer quick).

YnAEMP allows you to change the game speed (and other options. and allows hotseat. and save most options)

/selfpromotion :D

I got this yesterday and it's great. But citrus in Europe (all over europe actually) is just weird...

Well spotted! These size issues are intended the way they are. The focus is on also being able to have fun with civs that otherwise have too little room. The design may therefore not be realistic in terms of global dimensions but every continent is in the right context to itself and the rest, so that it feels realistic.

Given the possiblities that hopefully may come in the future it is better to have a bigger Hawaiian archiple to serve as home for the Polynesians than a smaller one. ;)
