Hmm tough poll.
Well definately RTR mod is superior to RTW.
I picked CivIII but SMAC is just as close. SMAC was just awesome, it created such an immersive atmosphere. And the strategies one could use were countless depending upon the faction chosen. You could always try out a new strategy. That game was designed with love & passion.
Civ IV sucks. I hope the expansion packs/mods/patches polish it up.
Still some very promising strategy games are going to be released this year such as Medieval II: Total War in xmas and Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords which promise to deliver excellent TBS strategy gaming.
I'm glad the TBS genre is picking off again, there was a time when only the Civ franchise had the market niche.
Strange how after all these years no one has come up with a decent X-Com sequel (not the horrible Aftershock and Aftermath).
