Standard Immortal continents. I am off to a good start here and I think I have it won. What would you pick for a panteon based on what you can see here?

My lands are an equal mix of pasture, plantation and stone tles. I will be putting a second city sw on the coast after the market gets done.

I cant really choose between the 3 I mentioned or is another one a better choice?

Messenger to the Gods, and conquer your whole continent to make it big

Then go Tithe if religion still available

Stone circles. Turn 91 is pretty late for religion and I can't tell if all of those other red cities in the mini-map are yours and, if so, whether they also have quarries, but if you stay at 1 faith per turn (New York isn't going to build a shrine any time soon), you have no hope of a religion before the game ends. With 2 quarries in London (and you will assuredly work the quarries for, basically, the rest of the game), you'll be up to 5 faith per turn, which at least gets you into the religion hunt (unless you annex New York, you can't control whether than quarry gets worked). Add a temple n London if you can.

The pasture and plantation pantheons will just give you 1 :c5culture: per tile, and Messenger of the Gods 2 :c5science: per city with a trade route. You do need culture and beakers, but those will be no help on founding a religion. If you don't want to (or don't think you will be able to) found a religion, then Messenger of the Gods or the culture pantheons are probably better.

This. Other red cities belong to Mongols. For now. :)
I would say the choice depends on VC. Budweiser, if you play for domination, then definitely Stone Circles to have a shot at religion and some sort of happiness boosting beliefs. If the game is supposed to be peaceful (unless I'm confusing you with someone else, you usually play for culture, right?) then Fertility Rites. I'm actually surprised so many 'good' pantheons are still availiable so late in the game.

Any 3+ stone/marble plots is great for stone circle pantheon imo. If I work 6 desert tiles I'll also use the desert folklore.

Yeah, this will have to be a domination game. I am having no luck playing peacefully on Immortal. At first I was leaning toward the culture. But, I feel that if I take stone cirlces I might pick up one of the last religions. I kinda think gtting a religion for more money might be a good option.

My plan now is to build the NC, found city 2 and then get 4 more bows then some knights. With this force, 8 longbows, I think I will roll the Mongols and then possibly Rome. Washington will fall be later with a land/sea attack.

I assume machinery before education?

If it were a regular pantheon time, absolutely stone circles is best. As it is late you could still go for it, or you can just take a pantheon and not try for a religion, in which case fertility rites or if it's left the river hapiness one might be decent.

I went with stone circles and got the religion. Still 13 turns away from Longbows. Washington is plotting to attack me again so he will die first. Rome has 10 times the troops I have.

I played to t193. Washington is gone. The Mongol cap is mine and I am locked in a struggle with Rome. He has rifles and cannons and I have highly promoted Longbows and the Great Wall that Washington built. It is no lie to say that I have not lost a single unit in combat all game long. I did lose a scout and a unit in the water when I wasnt paying attention but I'm not counting that.

I am suffering badly in the science department. Rome is 10 techs ahead and if comes out with planes then its over. Right now I can cheese my way forward with citadels or make peace at the right moment and maybe kill someone else.

Edit: I checked the soldiers numbers real quick before work. He has 3 times my men now. Of course, my numbers are going up and his are steadily going down. When I first attacked him, he had nothing but trebs, now he has cannons and a few rifles. It seems he is ironless this game. Rome is just 4 cities away. I will have cannons in 9 turns and am also 9 turns away from my first SoL.

Re: Religion. Something interesting is happening in the Roman lands. Rome took God of War and now when I capture his cities, I have God of War in them. I am actually gaining faith from his religion when my men kill his men.

That would be pretty typical with an army of very highly promoted ranged units. I did the same thing with Keshiks and Camels. I never thought about doing it with Longbows, might have to give that a try. Let us know how you fare against the Romans.

GL just don't get beat to flight, tech and steal techs towards it. If he beats you to it protect those longbows even if you have to cede ground. You can get back in it once you have flight.

I gave it up around t203. I took one more city but after that the defense values skyrocketed to 60 and 80. I started to get 1 shotted and lost units. He started bringing in cav which was a bother and would not talk peace.

I suppose I could have held the line and gone after more border towns with my new navy, but I wanst in the mood.

I had some nice longbows, march and logistics with cover and barrage III.

bud, that's one of the keys to conquest/domination - you must keep up in quality and quantity. When they make the jump to 80, you should be ready with Artillery (upgraded Cannons). And you should be pumping out units to have a high ranking in Soldiers so others will fear you. It's great to have a core of maxed out units but you must have any army (and navy, and eventually air force) behind them.

Well, you must keep up at least with one of them. :D I usually don't have a huge army at all. My military rank is relatively low even when I'm approaching the very last capital. But the army is advanced and yes, highly promoted. And, of course, I can if I only want, to increase the volume of the troops in <10 turns. I don't remember the last time I needed though. Still, longbows against 80 strength cities are not gonna cut it, that's true.

At t203 you should have been at Gatling Guns easily and started shredding him. If your going with a Crossbow UU you should be able to get to Industrialization at like t160-170 depending on the game. It comes back to your science. It looks like you neglected Education for Machinery which IMO is a bad idea if your normal beakers are weak(and they are). That doomed you from the start really. And until they fix the targeting bug for 3-range units, if they ever do, you need to bring siege units along.

Until you become a runaway yourself you're not going to be scaring the crap out of many AI with your numbers.

Can you post a save budweiser? I kinda want to give this game a try when I get off work. :p

Is his cap really inland, or is there a "border town" that's super close to his cap?

Because then you could've taken 6-9 SoTLs, blasted and take that town... and kill everything he sends in. Since you've got GW, so long as Dynamite is blocked, that means he'll probably send in his cavalries in first and those are super vulnerable to massed frigate fire.

SoTLs are serious business even against Modern cities.:king:

I agree and I am having second thoughts about resigning this AM. I had 4 SoL and could have had 5 or 6 ready along with muskets and cannons to take his outlying cities. It would have been a 2 prong attack. Anyway no big deal.

This was an up hill push right from the start. Washington came at me on t59 with iron units. I was lucky to have the bowmen ready. And then the jungle terrain really was an impedemaent to LoS and mobility. I was bogged down.

Next time, I will do Education>Machinery instead of Machinery>Education.

I might not have this save, I started a new game after I quit. I will check tonight.

Machinery before Education is ok (ish), I think, but only if you can make up for lost beakers by constantly adding new territories to your empire. If you start stagnating, it's hard to recover.

I agree it can be OK, if you have beakers like you say.
