Which rock guitarist is the biggest poser?

m8, you are not in your teens anymore, so think of behaving ;)

Ya Owen, behave maturely and call rock guitarists posers for being more popular than you.

My mistake I've just been so distracted by all these phonies lately

^If you feel that negatively, just stay away from the thread. Really, time for you to stop being a d-bag in all my threads as if it somehow has to keep happening, man. I live in the other edge of the planet to you, so give it a rest and move on, regardless of what the issue is in your view

When the criticism is both valid and constructive, can it really be viewed as harassment? Perhaps instead it is just participation in the forum itself.

So should this thread's title be changed to: "Which rock guitarists does Kyriakos not like and wants an excuse to complain about?"

Because you know we have a rants thread for that.

This.

Anyway you all saying the Edge isn't a great guitarist: That depends what defines what makes a "great guitarist" to begin with. I bet 99% of people who consider the Edge to be a bad guitarist also would say the same for Pete Townshed, and I don't care what they think.

There is a lot more to being a great guitarist than just playing difficult music on Guitar. The Edge creates good melodies for his band and creates a sound that tons of people want to hear. I'd rather have the Edge in my band and watch its popularity skyrocket than have Johnny Nobody who can "shred" but continue to play in small town bars and go nowhere. If all you care about is playing difficult guitar pieces, you are likely to never have much commercial success.

And Man in the Box by Alice in Chains is an excellent song. It isn't "emo". Although even if it were, that wouldn't automatically disqualify it from being good.

Guitarists often are utter posers, so why not ask the question to expose (cough) them :band:

Note that classical-metal hybrid guitarists aren't really meant to be included, cause they are all utter posers anyway :yup:

Some candidates, imo:

Slash (Guns n Roses)

Jerry Candrell (Alice in Chains)

Brian May (Queen)

Link to video.

Candrell was hyper-emo.

Some better candidates: Gus G, Athan Hilaki, Marios Iliopoulos, Katrin the Thrill, Sakis Rouvas, Sakis Tolis, Kostas Tournas and Phil X.

lol false dichotomy much?

Nope. There's WAY too may snobby "guitar gurus' who think technical ability to play is the only thing that matters. Beyond that, the Edge (and "effects" guitarist like him who are in successful bands) can probably play much harder music than what he plays live/for the album. What he plays in the band is what that style of music requires, which is why that's all he plays. If the Edge stopped playing the style of music he does now and started "shredding" watch U2 no longer be able to fill up stadiums.

COMPOSING MUSIC is also a huge aspect for musicians/guitarist as well as ACCOMPANYING your band mates. People like the edge are trying to make the rest of the band shine and bands like U2 are where the whole is greater than each of the parts. Hence why they have so much success. He isn't even trying to show off in the first place.

"guitar gurus" are my definition of snobby people that put show-offs over everything else combined.

The Edge? Creates beautiful, unique melodies (call U2 generic but how many bands can you actually name that are similar) that enhances the entire compositions, not just his own playing.

Pete Townshed? Excellent lyrics, excellent composition, pioneer of the synthesizer, creates gut wrenching melodies.

I'd take either one of them any day of the week over someone that can shred. edit: and again, they can probably "shred" too, they just choose not to because their style of music doesn't require them to show off.

Here's the world record for guitar playing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfeTAz2b-9o

He can probably play a lot faster than Pete Townshed, The Edge, and perhaps anyone else in the world- so what? The ability to play chops fast is one aspect to guitar playing (don't get me wrong) but people that put that above all others combined (or people that even think it's the very most important) are irrelevant to me.

What do any of these attributes have to do with playing the guitar?

Would you seriously take johnny may-or-may-not-be-the-Guinness-world-records nobody over someone who is a refined and extremely talented musician?

Again - what do lyrics, composition, and playing the synthesizer have to do with playing the guitar?

there are two kinds of guitarist in rock bands:

Those that are trying to accompany the rest of the band and make the singer shine, and those that try to sound great pretty much on their own.

Most people when deciding "great guitar players" don't even consider the first category, even though they're just as great in and in some cases even greater, just because they're a completely different style and are not even trying to be in the second category. Showoff guitarist are nowhere near my style of music which is why just about every guitarist I like is not going to be liked by guitar "gurus" but they fail to realize those guitarist aren't even trying to show off with "wicked solos", they're trying to make the rest of the band sound better.

And at the very least: considering Townshed writes his own music and I consider his guitar compositions to be much more beautiful than johnny nobody who "improvises" the blues or whatever, it's pretty obvious to me who is the best. Again the guitar gurus and the snobs such as the people at rolling stone magazine are going to rate the guitarists I like better, but that's because they have a completely different value system for guitarists to begin with.

So you consider Pete Townshend to be a better guitar player than a hypothetical guitarist whom you consider worse than Pete Townshend.

Uh...good to know

Ok fine. Rolling Stone Magazine rates Keith Richards higher than Townshed in their "top 100 guitarists of all time" but I find Townshed to be much better. And lots of people in the comments section were whining that RS "overrated" Townshed at number 10, but I find it quite the other way around.
