Currently, on my computer, I have the Norton Antivirus 2003 virus scanner.
I know some people would prefer it over McAfee and some would prefer McAfee over Norton.
Which one do you think is better?

So far, I am pretty satisfied with Norton, though I have never tried McAfee.

They are both identical in my opinion, it's like coke and pepsi. I use Norton though... (not because I like it any better)

Edit: Bold-ed for the hard of sight-ed ;)

I have Norton AntiVirus '04, works just fine. Too bad M$ doesn't work well . . .

Having SpyBot and/or Adaware is also useful to get rid of crap that NAV misses, also RegSeeker is an extremely useful tool . . .

I use the free version of AVG on my home machines, McAfee in commercial networks. McAfee vs Symantec/Norton is a Coke/Pepsi debate. 98% the same, and either one works a lot better than none at all.

I had one called avast which pissed me off. at the moment i don't have one going tho i don't use that computer for net stuff atm. probably will use vet when i do tho.

In their last issue, Maximum PC magazine gave Norton '04 an 8 out of 10, Mcafee a 6 out of ten (mainly because of the annoying ads), and AVG(free edition) a 9 out of ten (doesn't have all of the bells and whistles, but it found all of the same test viruses in the same amount of time as the other two and it's free).

you should have both, since a firewall will do jack if a virus is already on your machine or if for example it's in an email attachment

you should.. blah blah..I don't use "anti"virus, it slows machine too much.

If you have a faster CPU it will not make a diff. ;)

If you don't use antivirus and manage to get a virus, your machine will slow down a LOT more.

On my old computer (the one without Norton), I usually get like two in a year average. :ack: That's why I usually buy a lot of CDs to back up any info, mainly Civ downloads. ;)

I'm using the Freedom Security Suite by ZeroKnowledge:lol:

available for:lol:

for free through my ISP. It belongs in the Never Buy that Again thread, terrible company, throwaway product. It has this glaring bug which

which ZeroKnowledge says in robotic answer to my email they can't (won't) fix presently but will solve in future versions of the software, which I may purchase.

The bug is a hang on shutdown if the antivirus window (full of ads) is set not to maximise on system startup. I do enjoy reading the system error messages blaming "Freedom".

Besides that, I've had no grief with it, and the built in popup stopper and updated ad/adware server block list work nicely. Freedom has lots of privacy tools too. The company Zero:lol:

ZeroKnowledge has its origins in making software for encrypted, anonymous, and otherwise secure information transfer, thus the name.

Maybe I'm alone, but if you think they are identical, I don't agree with your comparison... not that that is the purpose of this thread.:)

Well, I don't use an anti-virus. Just don't open attachments, and have a firewall. Have never had a virus either, after 10+ years of trying ;)
Same here, I doubt I'd buy an AV program separately, I have been the target of maybe 1 or 2 viruses over my life, and none was fatal...

Norton Internet Security came with the computer though, and I don't really trust the rest of the users, although they are mortified of unexpected attachments.:)

I use AntiVir 6 personal edition which is free. It just sufferd some mistrust:

I installed an old 7.1 version of Steel Panthers World at War from an old CD that dates back to year 2002. Few days after that I installed malware scanner program from http://www.emsisoft.com/en/ and scanned my computer. It claimed SPWAW game excecutable MECH.EXE contained "Trojan.Dropper.Win32.Smorph". However newest AntiVir did not detect anything. I tried the game and always when MECH.EXE was started it tried to connect somewhere (Zonealarm blocked). It didn't spread to any other files however so the game was safe to play since I didn't allow it to connect anywhere. I have the file uploaded here if someone want's to try their scanners on it [Edit]File removed[/Edit]. If you do, tell me what you found out!

If you wonder why I uploaded it there. It was too big to attach with hotmail so It's there for AntiVir team if they want to have a look for it. I reported it as a suspicious file for them.
