I would like to devote a thread to the topic of white flight. Why? Because white flight has changed America.

For those of you who do not know what white flight is, let me elaborate: It merely means the trend of white Americans who have traditionally settled in major cities moving out into the countryside and to suburbs to escape minorities. The creation of suburbian cities, the transformation of small rural villages into huge golf-course covered and mansion laden cities, has all been the result of white flight.

Many people do not understand or know about white flight and the huge impact it has had on America as a whole. To name a "few" things white flight has done to America: 1) Created the conservative South. 2) Turned California from a Republican stronghold into a Democratic stronghold. 3) Turned much of the Southeast Republican while in the past it was balanced.

Very major things, indeed.

So,

Do you believe in white flight?
Do you support it?
Is it good for America?
Are you a product of white flight?
Is it rasist?

1) Created the conservative South.
how?

2) Turned California from a Republican stronghold into a Democratic stronghold.

When was California a republican stronghold? Seems that you are saying the same phenomenen pushed the south right and the coast left.

3) Turned much of the Southeast Republican while in the past it was balanced.

Please elaborate.

A lot of immigration from the Northern states and large urban cities down to the Southern USA shifted demographics and turned them more conservative (the South was largely socialist, a relic from the FDR programs).

Ever since California was established it has been largely Republican, about 60% Republican. Due to white flight many white Californians migrated into Arizona, and Idaho, etc, turning them largely conservative.

Please elaborate.

See above - the whites that moved from CA to these states made them largely conservative.

Here are some informations from wikipedia:

The forces and groups involved in white flight in Southern California are distinct from those in other areas due to the region's demography and history.

Many whites once lived in urban neighborhoods in Los Angeles before departing the city in large numbers after the 1965 Watts Riots. This trend actually began before the riots but it accelerated in their wake. The major 12th Street Riot in Detroit in 1967 and during the following year, after the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., contributed to white flight in that city. Now, the city of Detroit is over 80% black whereas a majority of its neighboring suburbs, such as Livonia, Dearborn, and Warren, are predominantly white.[7]. Similarly, after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, large numbers of white Californians left Southern California or left the state entirely. The phenomenon has affected not only the central city basin, but also the suburban regions of the San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California, where many working-class Hispanics and lower to upper-middle class Asians have moved during much of the 1980s and 1990s.

In addition, during the 1990's and 2000's, many blacks have continued to move out of the historically African American communities such as Inglewood and Compton to inland communities such as Fontana, Rialto, Palmdale, Orange County, and Ventura County [8].

Some of the people leaving Los Angeles have moved to inland California and other states. Many of these ex-Californians ended up settling in the Rocky Mountain States of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho and Nevada. As these people have tended to be politically conservative, their departure from the state has helped to transform California into a stronghold of the Democratic Party, while making their new home states even more favorable to the Republicans.[9]

Another form of white flight is also taking place in many parts of Northern California, such as the western suburbs of San Jose, California. White flight, though taking place at a slower pace, is also affecting high-income upper-class neighborhoods that are becoming increasingly Chinese American.[10]

I know this has nothing to do with this thread, but I can't stand Trotskyists for the life of me.

You've got it twisted m8 it is rich flight and it goes in cycles.

*clears throat* Yes minorites tend to be poorer but, they to move to the burbs when they have money. If you can afford it most people would rather not live in or near a ghetto. Trust me even white people live in ghettos Naked city has the highest (had) murder rate out of any zip code in the country and it is 90% white .....sure lots of tweakers but, I doubt being on drugs makes them any less white.

The cycles in history class they taught us that cites grow in rings you have the old city then rings grow around it where the houses farther and farther out get more and more expensive then eventually the first and second ring begin to become ghetto. Then downtown is bought up and turned into a "urban renewal" which is code for buy up the ghetto which is right next to all of the nice buildings and put condos there so the rich can get to work faster. This process is ussually accelerated by the city on the grounds of immanite domain and by saying that it will be good for business to "cleen up" down town.

That is an interesting theory but I do not believe it.

They don't leave to escape minorities. Its not white flight either it is wealth flight.

Seriously, and until I see strong evidence to the contrary I'm going to go ahead and point out that its pretty prejudiced against White people to assume that none of them can stand to live with minorities and are thus motivated to make life changing decisions out of their dislike for them.

Is it rasist?

For the love of God dude, it is RACIST. With a "C". Because the root word is "race". I know we aren't supposed to be spelling police around here, but this is getting repetitive. ;)

OT: While white flight may have something to do with whites fleeing minorities, it has more to do with the advent of publicly funded superhighways, government mortgage support, and the advent of the automobile. This was also combined with a lack of investment in public transport, and other central city infrastructure, which made the inner city less attractive in absolute terms.

The reasons that whites went to the suburbs had more to do with the fact that the whites could afford to, while the blacks could not nearly as much. Explicitly moving to get away from minorities was at best a minor factor - at least in the first few decades.

I suppose the "American Dream" may have contributed, but behind it all were rational choices based on economic incentives (distortions?), largely attributable to government policy.

With piss poor public transit in most American cities, poor people simply cannot afford to live too far from their jobs like middle class people can, so they congregate in ghettoes. It's pretty simple.

Piss poor public transpotation?? Have you been to an American city?

In comparison to Paris? Tokyo? Singapore? Moscow? Madrid? Hell, Mexico City's subway?

New York, D.C., L.A. I've done Tokyo's mass tranisit and its on par with those three.

Los Angeles has the second largest public transportation agency in the nation that operates more than 1,500 buses. We also have a subway system that can take you from Downtown Los Angeles to Hollywood in about 12 minutes! LA's Metropolitan Transit Authority operates the public buses and commuter trains within Los Angeles.

Until 1976, I lived in Kansas City, Kansas. Section 8 apartments went in across the street from where I lived. The manager of the apartment complex was brutally raped in her apartment within 2 months of the complex opening and robberies, vandalism, etc were also becoming regular occurances. My parents put the house up for sale and moved us to a rural (not suburban) community south of Kansas City, Missouri.

We're white and we fled, but I'd say we fled violence, not race.

Those are what we call exceptions to the rule. And AFAIK, New York needs some serious reinvestment.

L.A. has done well in the last 20 years because California leads the way in most things. They led the way in sprawl, and were the first to feel the consequences of it. L.A., having seen the problems of a mass automobile society, started to lead the way in making changes, and as a result is the densest metropolitan area in the U.S. (by some measures). It's problem was that it had a LONG way to go. I have seen little indication to suggest that the bulk of the other cities have followed suit.
