Why are these dudes so offended?

Right, and sometimes the manipulation is overt and intentional.

My preference is to make rational purchasing decisions. Trying to manipulate me pisses me off.

When a customer said that, or obviously thought it, it always made my day.

We are also on the lookout for when people try to bind us with reciprocity. So, when someone's trying to trick us, we get our guard up.

I react similarly when the companies send hot women as sales reps. I'm pissed that they disrespect me so.

Man if I had a company I'd love it if other companies sent hot reps to pine for my money

Initially? They still view him as being beneath them.

It would have been interesting to see how they would have responded had the guy challenged them immediately.

"I try to give you money and you pop off like that? How about an appropriate apology before I rip your condescending head right off your shoulders?" would have been my next line.

If you make that video I will watch it.

Maybe they react with anger because their expectations are subverted and they do not understand the situation, maybe they think they are beeing scammed, maybe they are too proud to accept money, maybe something else.

"Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something."

I used to work a Retention job in a call center. I wasn't very good at it because I didn't believe enough in the product (home warranties) to try to manipulate customers into keeping it. And I'm not good at pretending like I believe in it either...overall it just felt too slimy and we were obviously taking advantage of the poorer sections of society.

People are easily offended when someone insults their Profit.

People are easily offended when someone insults their Profit.

I've having trouble conceptualizing what this means. Sounds cool tho

Aw, don't sell yourself short...

Its true, Tims truly is a hot chick. Why do you think there are no pics of him in the self screenies thread :p

People are easily offended when someone insults their Profit prophet.

:shifty: I see wot you did thar...

Its true, Tims truly is a hot chick. Why do you think there are no pics of him in the self screenies thread :p

Twist! Tims has been manipulating us the whole time!

Yeah, and if you were selling me medicine for patients, and then cackled when I said it and then tried to bribe me, it would have pissed me off too.

I was neither a cackler nor a salesman who typically resorted to bribery...though if the price was right I was certainly willing.

The gist is the guy is acting homeless and giving money and recording responses. He receives confusion and then anger from the suits. I don't understand, why are there so many angry dudes who then think the appropriate response is to declare themselves rich? Why not "haha thanks, I'm good." or "I'll pay it forward"?
Hierarchy, I guess. These guys inhabit a universe where the poor defer to the rich and the rich condescend to the poor. Seeing that relationship inverted is some powerful dissonance. Even OWS ultimately affirmed the current order of things, they just attempted to negotiate the relative levels of deference and condescension; this guy is turning the whole social order on its head, and perhaps worse, doesn't even seem to realise he's doing it, and that's like a smack in the mouth.

edit: What Warpus said...
Your place in the social hierarchy matters quite a bit in a society built up around the concept of materialism.

These people are upset because their place in this system is being questioned by someone who they initially viewed to be beneath them.

That's nice! A fine example of "not-doing", imo.

But yeah. They mostly react badly. (Apart from the first woman who reacted exactly right, I think.)

What's the explanation? Perhaps it's that their sense of self-worth is so tied up with their "cash-worth" that to offer them money is to directly attack their sense of self-worth. I don't know if that's true, but that would be my guess.

It's ironic that a lot of them start out by claiming they don't have any money, and then refusing to take any. Perhaps they don't like being caught out in a lie.

Exactly, money is seen as a status symbol.

I guess I'm like derpderpderp don't the rich dudes know the real players don't get insulted that easily? Maybe part of it is that they feel like frauds who cling to their benzes and black cards like it could all end tomorrow. Their status and money, that is.
