During pre-WW1 and even to a lesser extent post-WW1 it seemed that so many countries wanted influence in the Balkans. Italy, Ausria-Hungary, Russia, the Ottoman Empire, and even the British. WW1 was pretty much started because of conflicts of interest in Serbia. What I am trying to find out is that was the Serbia really worth starting WW1 and did these nations really need influence in such a small place in the World and even in Europe.

Throughout the 19th Century, the Great Powers had different aims over the "Eastern Question", the integrity of the Ottoman Empire. Russia wished for access to the "warm waters" of the Mediterranean and followed a pan-Slavic foreign policy, supporting Bulgaria and Serbia. Britain wished to deny Russia access to the "warm waters" and supported the integrity of the Ottoman Empire, though it also supported a limited expansion of Greece as a backup plan in case integrity of the empire was no longer possible. France wished to strengthen her position in the region, especially in the Levant. Austria-Hungary wished for a continuation of the existence of the Ottoman Empire, since both were multinational entities ruled by a small elite and thus the collapse of the one would affect the other as well. Also, in the eyes of the Habsburg Empire, with its large Serbian and Croatian populations, the strengthening of Serbia was highly undesirable. While it has been argued that Italy from that time already wished to recreate the Roman empire, her main aim at the time seems to have been primarily the denial of access to the Adriatic Sea of another major sea power. Germany in turn, under the "Drang nach Osten" policy, aspired to turn the empire into its own de-facto colony, and thus supported its integrity.

That sums it up.

fell out over the division of the spoils.

The Ottomans did lose control over this vast region that has many divided ethnic people that were relatively weak in maintaining and fostering their own independant national ideology that all of their own people can abide.

What Silver said, and apart from that the sheer multitude of people living there is always prone to create problems, as each wants something different. Just try to count the number of ethnic groups in the Balkans.... :crazyeye:

Spoiler :
In order of size:
- Romanians
- Greeks
- Turks
- Bulgarians
- Serbs
- Albanians
- Croats
- Bosnians
- Macedonians
- Hungarians, various Hungarian minorities in various countries
- Romas, with an uncertain number (?) Probably a few millions in total

And those are just the major ones... There are a million smaller others like the Svern Serbs, Szekely, Aromanians, Megleno-Romanians, Bulgarian Turks, or Lipovans (exiled Russians) in eastern Romania.

Apart from that, in the region there are also the following religions (again in order of size)
- Orthodox Christians (and some Old Rite Orthodox Christians)
- Catholic Christians
- Greek Catholics (Eastern Catholics)
- Muslims
- Protestants (mainly the Szekely minority in Romania)

And apart from that, the languages are so amazingly diverse....

Have you ever seen Greek women? theres your answer
The mustache ones or hopefully the long jet hair one with nice long tanned legs, as well as vibrant perky boobs shaped as a nice downward slope that you would love to slide your tongue against?

Ehh, either way, I'm not fussy

If you want to invade Asia Minor or Asia Minor wants to invade you, the Balkans are sorta in the middle.

So pretty much the Russians wanted acess to the Mediterranean Sea and unite the Slavs. The Brittish wanted to balance the Russians by making sure they did not get acess to the Mediterranean Sea. The Austrian-Hungarians needed to make sure the Ottomans multiethnical empire stood standing to avoid their multiethnic empire from collapsing due to ethnic resenters. Also a strong Serbian and Crotian empire was undesireable. The The Italians wanted to restore the long lost glory of the Roman Empire and was starting persue that goal. The France also wanted to have some influence in the region to.

Also, the Ottomans filled the power gap in the Balkans. If it had grew too weak and collaspe as it did, there would a power shift especially with Austria-Hungary and Russia swooping in to pick up the remants.
