Why do cities always have to produce "something" ?

This is an aspect of the game that I sometimes find annoying. Why do I always have to choose something to produce in all cities ?

Some of the cities I took over from would take forever to build anything useful anyway...

There should be a settings that let's you choose "Build Nothing for now"...

Am I missing something? (Sorry I am a CIV newbie)

you can produce science or wealth (once you have the appropriate tech).

you might just want to puppet or raze these cities if you really don't want them.

You can set it to "wealth" and you will get a little gold instead of nothing.

If you haven't researched the tech that allows you to build wealth, build somthing with no maintenance cost (walls, etc.). Can't hurt.

I always setup my production ("of tiles"), usually towards gold. What I am talking about is building "stuff"...?

I can indeed build wall (useless), but why do I have to choose ? I can order my unit to "do nothing". The game should let me choose to "build nothing" for this turn (or more).

You can actually choose 'Gold' as a production. Scroll down on the production/buildings page, its at the very bottom.

If you really don't want to actually have anything built (if you're running out of gold to pay for maintenance, for example), then you can partially build and then fiddle around with your queue so you have a whole lot of nearly complete buildings. Then when you do want to build, they'll come much quicker. Failing to get wonders can be a good money maker this way, too, as chgrogers noted.

Building gold is a bad choice -- it's currently better to build scouts and delete them because that gives more money.

You speak a version of Civ5 I don't understand.

It is always better to get something for your hammers than nothing.

I can see not wanting to rack up maintenance costs, but there are plenty of options to avoid that. Producing wealth, science, the gold buildings line, the walls line, building and deleting units, etc. All of these give you a least a little bit of value and have no downside.

The only point I can imagine of producing nothing instead of these would be to avoid having to "micro-manage" cities. But producing wealth accomplishes this, and producing a building once every 70 turns isn't exactly a lot of micro-management.

The only time I build walls is when I have nothing else to build. They have no upkeep cost, just hammers.

I generally don't build them either*, but the point is they are still better than producing nothing.

* except in the case where they are a prerequisite for a useful building like the Mughal Fort.

Actually they changed this
units only give 1 gold/10 hammers
Wealth gives 1 gold/4 hammers

So if a city is bugging you put it on wealth or research... or if neither of those are options, put it on building a unit that you can disband or use.

Note, I have had puppets build nothing. Once they build every building, they're not allowed to build units, and apparently they're not allowed to build wealth.
