"However, not all drinkers should suffer the stigma of those idiots who cannot control themselves."

The same can be said of any drug use, too.

Drinking killed my uncle, yet I can drink a glass of wine or a beer on occasion and be satisfied with just one--go figure! (Not to call my uncle an "idiot"--he had a disease called alcoholism, and not enough will to overcome it.)

I used to get drunk when I was young, and frankly I just got tired of not remembering the "good times" I supposedly had--kind of like the tree falling in the woods with nobody there, huh?

Of course, I never "blacked out" after smoking pot--yet THAT substance is illegal (perhaps it can inspire "dangerous" creativity--it's a good antidote to brainwashing because it can get you to think outside your normal "box"). Go figure....

Thanks for letting me vent about the drinking. I may have given the wrong idea. I am not against all drinking. I am against it when people drink with the goal of getting drunk. These people are stupid, dangerous, and foolish. They are a danger to themselves and others whether they realize it or not. It's not "cool" to get smashed and act like an idiot.

I hear stories all the time from people at work. There is this one guy who is still stuck in fraternity mode. He drinks every single weekend and then brings his lame stories into work. There are a couple other guys that drink and talk about it with him. These guys need to grow up in my opinion and take responsibility and act like adults. One of them has a family now and that needs to be his priority. And to the others that drink heavily, well, they are likely headed down the road of alcoholism. This is really sad. I have reached out to them too, but to no avail. I just hope someday they can see me and some of the other more mature people and realize that the answers to life's big questions are not in the bottom of the beer bottle.

Well that's the end of my sermon. I just wanted to throw this out there, at the risk of being mocked and rideculed for my conservative ideas. I am not directly insulting anyone here, so please don't think I mean any harm.

Take it easy and keep on civing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still, when one is in the "depths of utmost despair" or suffering from a similar traumatic situation, it seems that forgetfulness, even for a few hours, can be therapeutic. But, to be sure, it is a dangerous practice; though, at least in the U.S., it's often more inexpensive than dealing with a shrink.

Why do people drink? well first off it is kinda fun. I know it may sound juvenille but one of my favourite things to do is just get absolutly drunk and get in a fight with one of my friends (don't worry they like to do it too). No emotions attached, No bulls*it, just pure aggression. IT is quite cathartic (please note the use of a fancy word). I've always felt that alot of the worlds problems could be solved if people could jsut learn to channel their violence.

Drink Socially? No I don't. What a ridiculous idea. I'm a angry drunk (possibly cause of these damn Irish genes ;)) I hate talking to people when I'm drunk.

By the way I don't like it when people say there favourite alchohal tastes good. What rubbish. All alchohal tastes horrible compared to almost all other beverages. You can talk about it being an "acquired taste" all you want.

You probably take these statements with a grain of salt because while I don't drink very often (4-5 times a year) I am a unrepentant stoner. :smoke:

man, whisky preist, you are too honest... though i dont agree.

I dont really like soft drinks, they are too, sugary, and dont have a kick. i dont really like beer, but i love wine...
but nothing beats a rum and coke, its much nicer than normal coke.

Listen guys, I drink to have a good time. I don't NEED to drink but I choose to, because it puts me in a different mood. And while I'm at it, I light up a fat one to REALLY relax.

Bye the way, marijuana should be legal; both alcohol and cigarettes are more damaging than pot. But in this country politicians are still making careers out of "getting tough on drugs" and the public, being the morons they are, are buying into it.

Hey scorch. I was reaching. I can understand not likeing soft drinks. But when people say they love the taste of pure hard alcohal, I just want to slap them.

Not a big fan of rum, but rye and coke is a differnet matter altogether

Isn't it funny that in a thread called "Why do people drink?" we are discussing our favourite drinks. My kingdom for a moderator! Just Kidding

I don't really drink anymore, except for an occasional glass of wine or champaign at a wedding, or a beer or two if it's offered in someone's house. But my last drink was many months ago....

When I DID really drink, I hated stuff like Schnapps (might as well inject yourself with pure glucose--ewww!), but I did like Kahlua. Overall though I didn't like the softer "taste good" drinks either, because they were usually too sweet. It was beer mostly, or red wine (good for ya), or else Old Granddad or Early Times.... Long Island Ice Tea was my favorite mixed drink.

I DO actually like the taste of beer--I'll even drink O'Douls (non-alcoholic beer) because of the beer taste. Am I alone in that here?

I, personally, don't understand why people feel the need to 1. drink and drive or 2. go out looking for fights when they're drinking.

I'm not trying to attack Whisky Priest or anything. I like the fact that he's having fun with his friends while drunk. If he's an angry drunk, fine with me.

What's not fine with me is the angry drunk at a bar that has to pick a fight with everyone just because they're getting bumped into or spilled on or whatever. Stuff like that happens when there are drunk people dodging drunk people, all while carrying a pint of beer. People who get pissed about stuff like that just shouldn't go out. They're just ruining the night for everyone.

As for drinking and driving, that ruins the night period. I don't know about where you're from, but there are a few reasons I would NEVER drink and drive in Chicago.

1. I don't want to kill myself or anyone else.
2. I don't want to pay for any damage to my car or other peoples' property.
3. There are a million cabs in this town. With a group of friends, all chipping in, $3 each is much better than the gamble of drinking and driving.
4. There is NOWHERE to park. Especially near where you want to go. This isn't just at night or near bars. Parking is just impossible, so you shouldn't even bother.

Oh wait, why do I drink? I don't know. Probably because I always seem to have fun when I do. Uh-hum, Wrigley Field. But, I'm smart about it. I wish all others were the same way.

Call me crazy, but drinking and driving can ruin your life not just your night, and it can do that everywhere, not just Chicago (which sounds like an awesome city that I would like to visit)>

BTW, I may just be a little biased. I only had a drunk driver cause $700 worth of damage to my wife's car and almost kill our unborn baby. Drunk at 10:30am on a Wednesday morning. That's just sad.

D

That's terrible. The closest I've come is a rear end job by a drunk driver in a van. Ironically, I was in a cab on the way home from a bar at 4:30 in the morning. The damage to the cab was minimal, but the driver of the van went O.J. on us, and drove off. Then, the cab driver decided to chase the van. Eventually, the van drove thru a storefront. I couldn't believe what I saw. I felt like a "Cops" cameraman. Luckily, noone was hurt, and it was so late/early. Otherwise, some unlucky shopper or worker may have been killed.

Bicardi 151. Sometimes pure shot. :)

P.S. No driving, drink water, and get some good shuteye when it's all over.

yes, marajuana should be legal... the only problem with it is, if they put an age limit on it, it would not make it easier/harder for people to get it. you cannot grow alchohol, but anyone can grow marajuana.
I think the government has to accept defeat on the marajuana thing, legalize it, and put some tax on it.

althogh i know what your saying WP, i prefer straight vodka to vodka mixers, uh! vodka mixers are just gross!, straight vodka, is quite nice to sip though... depends what sorta mood im in.

Straight vodka!?! Ewww....

At least the bourbon I used to drink had a TASTE to it....

i dont understand when people say that vodka has no taste!!!

vodka has a better 'straight' taste than any other spirit, when you sip vodka, you can taste it, when you sip rum or bourbon, its just strange, it doesn't taste, just tingles

Bourbon has a pleasant smoky taste to it (well, it's an acquired taste, I'll give you that)--just hold a sipful in your mouth a little bit. I could actually tell the difference between different brands, back when I drank the stuff....

And it's wonderful for sore throats, too--either straight, or with a bit of honey in it.

Vodka is just distilled potato juice, from what I understand--basically water and starch.... No, I tended to mix vodka (like with orange juice, tomato juice, or Kahlua--yum!), but not mix bourbon (unless it was inconsequential cheap stuff, like Jim Beam).

vodka tastes alcohol. that´s pretty simple, but you can flavour it.:)
