Why doesn't the 'Edit' tag work as expected?

When you edit your own post before someone has viewed it there is no 'Edit' tag inserted in little italics at the bottom of it.

This is fine, and it is what we expect. It even makes sense to have it like that.

What I didn't expect was to see some posts having been edited without the Edit tag, and after several more replies to the thread had occourred.

Weird eh? Or is there some other rule that determines the 'Edit' tag's appearance?

There is also fixed time period after a post is made to edit a post with the tag being inserted. It is so the poster can view his post again, see that it looks or means not much like he intended, and fix it.

I always thought that it was decided by time. I've never had an edit tag when I've edited a post less than three minutes after I posted. Equally, I've always had an edit tag when I've edited three minutes or more afterwards. I wasn't aware of a rule regarding any posts following one's own post.

OK, maybe it's three minutes and not whether or not someone has viewed/replied to it.

But I am talking about an edit a long time after the original post. Like the next day. I have seen this on multiple occasions, with no 'edit' tag.

If Lefty has applied his "stealth moderator" technique to a post, it will not display an edit tag. A hallmark of this is changing an inflammatory personal reference to "really cool guy," or adding a moderator commentary without the "moderator action" tag being used.

Lefty is unique. :borg:

Maybe Switch625. :hmm:

Can anyone confirm that mods can do this and posters can't? It is useful to know as it tells me that they have been moderated, and not that they are being sneaky in a sneaky-type way I can only dream of...

Only Lefty & TF can do this, as I recall. Other mods leave the normal "this post edited by..." footnote like normal posters.

Check the Forum Leaders list - Lefty is officially "super". What extra powers this entails apart from untraceable post editing I know not

I understand why TF can do that, but why Lefty too?

I do not know why but for Admins and msyelf (super moderator but not admin) we do not get edit tags. If the edit is not obivious (like by the Moderator Action: x
Please read the forum rules: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=422889 tag) then we need to remeber to typed 'edited'

Note also that the 3 minute (or whatever time it is) no edit tag rule would also apply if a regular moderator empowered for that forum edited someone else's post within the time period.

I think that Lefty, being the "super mod," can moderate all forums; unlike other mods, which only moderate one to a few forums. I'm pretty sure that that and the "invisible editing power" are the only things that make him super.

Lefty can close threads from other forums; the other mods can't. In a thread where gonzo was complaining to close it, and I asked him can't you close it? he said no, only the moderator of the forum or a supermod can.

You can see Lefty at work in a few closed threads in this forum. Sometimes he closes it before Thunderfall does.

Ah, so thats why Lefty is the "unofficial" mod of site feedback.

Nope, in feedback and elsewhere outside my assigned forums, I act only at current need or in simple matters not requiring judgment. It something needs thought and is not an ongoing disruption, it waits for Thunderfall. Note also that in a disruptive 'emergency' in any forum any moderator can ban a poster to quench it until more direct authority logs on to sort it out.
Also I and other moderators answer many questions before Thunderfall simply because we see them first. He typically spends a block of time on the site at one point during the day, whereas I and some others log on for a few minutes several times days and thus see many queries first.
Also, I seem to have acquired a special resposiblity in feed back and elswhere to 'lighten things up'.
