I have just installed Civ 4, and I have some strange graphics; the leaders of the world only have eyes, noses and mouths, which are floating in space; and the land is mostly black. I am assuming that this is a result of a non-compatible graphics card. I have a VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP. I would be much obliged if someone could help me with this.

If your sure you have that IGP, then you are unlikely to be able to run it successfully. It needs Hardware T&L support - although the latest Intel 945 express chips will run it.

If you are unsure - run dxdiag - it will tell you there - you may be able to fit a video card, slim chance - but need to see the Dxdiag

Well, being no expert in hardware by any stretch, I will provide a picture of the dxdiag:

I hope this may help you.

Almost there - what we need is the ouput from that

But ....

Can see on the opening screen there that you have a Via IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor). ie its on board graphics, not a Video card, so you willl not be able to run the game.

Minimum Hardware
Operating System: Windows® 2000/XP
Processor: 1.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon processor or equivalent
Memory: 256 MB RAM (Windows 2000) / 512 MB RAM (Windows XP)
Hard Disk Space: 1.7 GB Free
CD-ROM Drive: 4X Speed
Video: DirectX 9.0c-compatible 64 MB video card with Hardware T&L support ( GeForce 2/Radeon 7500 or better)
Sound: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card
DirectX®: DirectX® version 9.0c (included) or higher

Recommended Hardware
Operating System: Windows® 2000/XP
Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon processor or equivalent
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Hard Disk Space: 1.7 GB Free
CD-ROM Drive: 4X Speed
Video: 128 MB Video Card w/ DirectX 8 support (pixel & vertex shaders)
Sound: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card
DirectX®: DirectX® version 9.0c (included) or higher

It may - may, slim chance - be possible to fit a card, but it depends on the rest of the machine specs. Frankly its unlikely, but, if you post your dxdiag, we will know definitely one way or the other

Dxdiag file (Start button - click - select run - type dxdiag - hit enter - wait a min - select 'save all information' - post using the 'go advanced' button below)

@resmc,

A lot of people with laptops are having problems with this. First, make sure you have updated 1.09, if not 1.52. This fixed part of my problem (leaderheads).

If you continue to have black map problems, there are 'cheats' that will allow you to view the terrain that involve revealing the map, either by viewing all tiles in the terrain editor, or else giving yourself the tech 'satellites'.
