Will the AI sue for peace?

I think they did in Vanilla, but it doesn't happen in BtS (no idea about Warlords).

Why did they change this?

I'd think that it annoyed players. Think about it: if you want peace you'll contact the AI. If you don't want peace, you'll be annoyed by the AI spamming requests over and over again. It just doesn't matter what the AI wants ;)

Takes away some of the game's atmosphere, but is better for playability.

And as always, the game is better when you use the BUG mod.

With BUG, you get a notification everytime an AI switches from willing-to-make-peace to unwilling-tmp or vice versa.
A notification like the usual "game saved" or "The Colossus has been built in a distant land" etc., not an annoying popup.

You can get the "great mediator" (only if you have events on?)

One tip/time saver when putting peace on the table is to then ask them "what would make this deal work" before you accept. At times, I've been surprised at all the things they've piled on top... and I would assume this is typically as much as they'll offer, so at least it can save you the time of seeing how much they're willing to give by trial and error.

Even at times when I was at a strategic/logistic disadvantage, they would accept peace, give me a bunch of gold and some techs... even though they were marching on a city they may well have been able to take.

I find this a good rule in general. I typically decline trade propositions and then come back at them with the same trade request and ask them what would make it work. Many times, you can squeak another 100G out of it....or more and I've never realized any appreciable diplo hit from doing this.

Of course, the "let's bury the hatchet..." may give the same results? I never choose that option, so I'm not sure.

^^

Related to the above, I've always wondered about a few things regarding bargaining with the AI. First, asking "what would make this deal work" doesn't result in them giving their best offer, right? I'm pretty sure I've gotten much better deals in normal trade situations than what they offered initially, which was often ridiculously unfair. Maybe I'm misremembering (I don't tend to use this option very much), or maybe this is different in the war/peace context.

Second, do your previous offers affect their willingness to agree to a particular deal? For example, if you start out asking for tons of cities and remove them one by one until you find a number they agree with, does this make them annoyed and less likely to cut a deal than if you started with a more "reasonable" offer, or do they have a "magic" number they will agree to regardless? (This sort of has implications for the first question as well, since if it doesn't matter what your previous offers were, there's no need to ask them, you can just figure out the best deal by process of elimination.)

They do.

When you ask what they are willing to offer, they will try to make the best offer they'd ever agree on.

If you simply add 1 gold (or anything else) on their side, they will never accept.
Of course, the AI is stupid; so they often don't really know what the best offer might be. This is especially important when they are offering technologies.
The AI will basically offer you its worst techs, but many of them; but really you usually want the best tech, even if that means you're only getting one tech instead of four.

One exception: the in-between-turns offers the AI make can sometimes actually be better than what they'd usually be willing to agree on. If the AI offers a techtrade ibt, you might want to briefly look at it; even though you will of course decline in most cases.

The lets bury the hatchet button is instant peace, but they don't always accept. It's like going to the diplo screen and saying peace treaty for peace treaty.

There is no "peace for peace" button!

[That is: you should never use it. Always ask what they are willing to pay; there is no downside to doing this.] ;)

Very rarely but sometimes, you have to really kick them before they will ask for peace and by then it is usually better to keep up the pressure and turn them into a vassal

They should sue for peace when they are willing to Capitulate, and not be same damn protective of their technology.

"You have one city left, the wolves are at the door, are you absolutely sure you won't give Civil Service in exchange for peace and your ongoing survival as a Civilisation?"
"You ask too much."

Oh come now, if they're down to their last city they know they've lost the game. Why should they owe you anything? ;)

Personally I kind of miss the old Civ3 thing where you had a chance at "learning" techs by taking enemy cities. "Yeah, we just rolled up into your city and own everything now but we don't know what these buildings do so.... we're just kill all the workers and not gonna not use the buildings until we can figure out what they do on our own." You should at least get a beaker boost for techs the enemy has that you haven't researched yet, imo.

I agree, even backward barbarians like me can learn
