Does anyone know exactly what this does? When I came home from work this morning is was running at ~90% of the processor capacity and slagging down even my screensaver. A simple reboot took care of it, but I've never seen lockup because of that and am very curious what the hell was going on...

Is that like svchost.exe in XP? I know it's connected to many services in XP and runs multiple copies of it. Although they don't take up much of the processor time, they take up quite a lot of memory.

superslug: I have had the same issue with my system for quite some time, now. If I could figure out which process Services was running on behalf of, it would help. Occasionally I can figure it out, but usually I just decide it's one of the several "auto-update-checkers" that some of my programs run. It usually clears in under 10 minutes, and then all is back to normal.

Possible culprits on my PC:
Windows auto-update
Mcaffee Security Center
Logitech Keyboard/Mouse driver autoupdateWindowBlinds
RealPlayer
WinAmp
WMP
Webshots
<probably others - I'm at work trying to remember what's in my SYstray ;) >

It's probably Windows auto-update then. I just enabled that last week.

Microsoft have just brought out a new security fix for XP etc. Problem is that everyone is trying to download it and the servers lock. Maybe thats the problem.

Interesting. Did they also roll this out for Win2K, because that's what I'm running?
